A few Astro CPS questions

Post by fireradio »

I am still pretty new to CPS, and Astro radios in general...

I am setting up some conventional personalities in my XTS3k/800, and I'm a bit confused by the "Direct/Talkaround" setting. By enabling the check box "Direct/Talkaround," will that permanently make that personality on talkaround mode all the time, or does it simply allow that personality to use talkaround mode when the designated talkaround button is pressed?

Also, just out of curiosity, could someone better explain the three different types of Astro modulation? (C4FM, WIDE, CQPSK)

Thanks!

If you enable the DIR button, as long as its displayed, all channels will be in the talkaround mode until you turn DIR off. Changing channels will not have an effect on the setting (at least with the X9000/Spectra/Astro Spectra/Astro Saber). I have heard that the new HT1250's/CDM's etc can be configired on a per channel basis, but I haven't used one in a long time....

C4FM is your typical digital system. I believe that WIDE is used is a large simulcast digital system like KSP's, and I don't remember what CQPSK is. If you leave it on C4FM, you can't go wrong.

Just to clarify, this is the option I am talking about:

What happens if I check/uncheck that button? If I leave it unchecked, will I not be able to use the Direct mode on that personality by pressing the side button I have programmed for direct mode, or...?

Sorry for such a seemingly simple question, but the info in the help file just doesn't make that much sense.

Thanks!

If you leave that box unchecked, then you will not have the option to go direct (talkaround) on that channel. I use the bottom right button below the PTT for talkaround. Some people don't use talkaround/direct much and put the option to turn it on/off via keypad menu, rather than have it so easly accessable from a simple press of one button.

The direct/talkaround (when turned on) allows you to talk on the repeaters output frequency (866.5125) rather than going through the repeater as normal.

Excellent, thanks for the help. Thats what I figured it would do, and I wanted to make sure, as I will be needing the talkaround feature. I've got the button directly above the PTT programmed as talkaround...

Thanks again!
