Looking For A Inexpensive Repair Shop

Post by b7spectra »

I'm in the Metro Atlanta area, but really don't want to use the /\/\ shops here as they are a complete rip off. I have 3 B7 Spectra's that have Fail 001 on them. Can someone recommend someone here who does good, honest work?

Thanks!

Please define "rip off", if you wouldn't mind.

HI:

1st I would like to say there are a number
of specialized persons who can provide proper
service to your Spectras !

However, depending on what caused the problem
( Customer error ), ( Over voltage, as from a vehicle
battery Charger ) or programming attempts with
a Pentium class computer, or radios from Ebay all
have a impact on price.

In " To days " world, you get what you pay for ! And
I am glad you used the word inexpensive, as I hate
the word Cheap.

I doubt you will get your radios checked or repaired
in the 25.00 ~ 75.00 Price range. Double that figure,
and you are in the ball park.

In any case, if you are not able to find someone
local, we can offer our services ( at a last resort )
but I am located in SD California, and your radios would
have to be shipped to us for repair.

There are others who are qualified as well, so
I am not the only person around. BUT due to the
large volume if radios being sent in, even I am now
2 ~ 4 weeks behind in completing repairs.

In addition, servicing Spectras is not a easy task,
or cheap when it comes to parts. Spectras were a
2000.00 ~ 3000.00 radio, and regardless if you got
them for free, the parts support is still expensive
if a main board should require replacement.

Anyhow, if you are unhappy with your current
service provider, we can address your radio issues
on a case by case basis.

We have been servicing Motorola products since
1972.

'normally'? Just what is normal? This could be an interesting subject. What is the going rate for shop time in various areas?

I would guess that it is on the order of $125.00/hour in the big city, $100.00/hour in mid sized cities and $60-$80 / hour in small towns.

A FAIL001 message tha occurs on its own in a Spectra [not the result of being programmed out of band] has a high probability of being a component failure that would require bench service and a charge on the order of at least an hours shop labor plus parts.

A lot of shops send this sort of problem off the the depot. Then you are looking at $300 plus shipping and handling.

So unless your locals are wanting $500 or so [that might justify the term 'rip-off' ] this is just the reality of being in business today.

Spectras can be very labor-intensive, and costly to fix. As stated above, this is no cheap radio. Even the Rockford depot doesn't really do component level repair, a lot get a new board(s) to get turned around quicker.

Figure about $200.00 minimum for a shop-level repair, or around $300.00 for depot service. Anything above that might qualify as too much.
