XTL 5000 Powers Down

I have a mid power XTL 5000 with legit tags and everything that powers down upon transmitting on a 158.xxxx channel. It does not power down on any other simplex or repeater channels. Thoughts?

Drawing enough current and resulting voltage drop to trigger a low voltage which will shutdown the radio.
Check:
Proper size wire and fuse/fuse holder for the main power direct from the battery to the radio. 12 ga minimum.
Ground to the vehicle body near the radio.
High VSWR and incorrect transmitter calibration/alignment.

Wiring is good and radio was tuned and aligned before I received it. I bet it's the power supply. It's mounted in the house with an Astron power supply, I think 7 Amps. I'll have to look. The XTL replaced a 25w VHF radio that did just fine on the existing power supply.

Are you using a secure module?
Radio firmware version?

No secure, firmware is latest I believe.
It is the power supply though...Astron SL-11MG. I'll have to upgrade the power supply at some point...but this is a glorified scanner at this point. Rarely do I have to transmit from my office.
Thanks everyone.

As I mentioned on another forum, adjust the TX power down some.

Agree with Will, that power supply can't handle the load

I'll adjust the TX down until I can find a suitable power supply. I'm not really in a rush and this thing is more of a scanner / spare VHF radio for me. Couldn't pass up the good deal on it. Thanks again everyone.

I think the power supply you already have is good. Any way you probably do not need all that 50 watts anyway.
Save some money for the Holidays....

Yeah, that's the plan.

Disagree and I think you will find the current draw at 50 watts is about 3/4 of the current draw at high power. Spec on the unit is 20 amps for full power. Hope it doesn't blow up your power supply.

It's a mid power, 50w XTL...not 110w full power.

Completely missed that part, my bad.

Turned lower power on and was able to transmit flawlessly on the 158s. I'll leave it on Low power for now, I really don't need the full 50 watts. Thanks again everyone.
