The ASTRO modem is a circuit board that piggy backs onto the wireline control board on the Quantar repeater and the DIU 3000. But, the ASTRO modem costs $1,300 per end. Is there any way that I could instead use "generic" 9600 baud modems at both ends, assuming an appropriate cable with the proper pinouts so the modems could be lashed-up to the Quantar and the DIU?

Just wondering if this is a viable possibility, or one of those things where the headaches and multiple problems suggest to bite the bullet and buy the ASTRO modem from M. Just feels bad to pay $2,600 for two ancient modems! (Then again, I'm the one who has said before that there is a price to pay for single vendor end-to-end system integration.)

Just take the monthly cost of the second 4-wire phone line you need with external modems and divide that into the $2600 to see what the payback is.

If your phone lines are free - use external modems & keep the money in your pocket.

If you decide to skip the Astro modems, you'll probably want a pair of the the V.24 daughter boards.
