APX7000 and Public Safety Mic PMMN4047A

Howdy Gang:
I just got my fancy new APX7000 at work which replaced the XTS5000 with the Public Safety Speaker/Microphone. The APX7000 is used in the hand-held only configuration and while the radio is great, taking the radio in-and-out of the holster is rough getting used to. As a result, I purchased my own PMMN4047A public safety mic. My question is: can I just take the antenna off the radio housing and move it up to the PSM or should I get a separate antenna?
Our system is analog, conventional, non-encrypted UHF. Even though the radios are 700/800 MHz and GPS capable, those items are not enabled. I believe that the software can be modified to send the radio RF to the handheld housing antenna or to the PSM antenna. When one attaches a PSM to an APX7000 does the radio "sense" the connection and send the RF to the PSM or does it keep sending the RF to the attached antenna?
Obviously, not being my radio, I'm a little squeamish about reading the radio and plumbing it's secrets so I thought I'd ask the brilliant minds and the BB radio forum gurus first.
