Fail 01/90 W9 Astro Spectra- Help Troubleshoot

Post by hvacesu78 »

W9 Control Head
FlschCd: 580001-00100-8

On the bench- Hooked up everything.. W9 Control head plugging into the "Control Unit" 25Pin Connector on Trunk Mount Unit.
Upon power up, W9 lights up,- Fail 01/90, Flickers, Fail 01/90
-I assumed power issue rechecked all connections and still same result.

Now--- i switched W9 Control Head to the Other 25Pin Connector on Trunk Mount Unit. The unit has powered up fine, Self Check, and I can Read/Write to Radio. -Only when W9 Control head is plugged into this 25 Pin Port.

Whats up with this ! Am I missing something? Or is there something else going on ?
Seeing how it may- not be a power issue what could it be? Why is it only working on the other 25Pin Not the Control Unit one as it should.

Thank You for your time.

I am doing some checking in the basic service manual I have. I am looking at the differences in the two db25 ports on the front of the radio. I am assuming you have a mid power radio since it labels the left port as control head. The only differences noted between the two ports are as follows: Control Head port- pin 4 is reset b+, 2nd port - pin 4 is n/c; C.H. pin 1 is PTT*, 2nd port pin 1 is PTT/VIP in 1; C.H. pin 15 - RSSI, 2nd port is RSSI/VIP in 2. All the other pins are labeled exactly the same.

I might think it has something to do with the reset B+. This is a guess at this point since everything else is pretty much labeled the same. I don't believe I have the schematics for this board but I will check.

Now I am looking at the control head cable diagram. Seems it doesn't even connect to pin 4, (the reset b+). The only pin that it connects to that is different between the two ports is pin 1 which is also labeled as vip in 1 on the 2nd port instead of just PTT. So it would seem to make sense that the control head would work just fine on the 2nd port but baffles me as to why it won't on the first. I would take the board off the radio and check to see if a trace is burned up.

Basically pins 17, 13, 16, 18, 22, 5, 14, 23, 21, 19, 9, 10, 1, 12, 11, 25 and 24 should all be connected between the two db 25 ports on the front connect board. These are the pins used by the control head cable. So if it works on the 2nd one (which it should after looking at the manual) then something is wrong with the control head db25 port, my guess is still a burned up trace or a bad componet on the board itself.

Jason..
Outstanding work.. I appreciate that..
I too have consulted the basic service manual.. and i agree that the 2 ports are 'parallel'
Certainly strange ! That the one port is 'shot'

I will check over the traces/components on the Control Head 25 Pin Port as you suggested.

thank you again. I will keep ya posted.

I suspected the ports would be parallel as the analog spectra is the same way. Let me know how it turns out. I don't know if you noticed the astro spectra service manual has a misprint on the cabling diagram. Where it shows what pins the control head cable goes to it say "0" for one of them. It should be "10".
