Hi there,

I am trying to modify a military headset to be used in a Saber radio by connecting a cut Saber handmic cable to the headset. The resulting speaker works fine but the mic pickup is really quiet.

I would like to know what is the impedance expectation of the external mic ( ohms @ ? kHz). I think the handmic cable is straight through.

Does it make any different if I use the 6 pin Hirose audio adaptor instead ?

Any idea how to increase the mic pick up ? I am sure the original Saber is completely passive with no built-in amp so there must be a way to do it right.

Most older military equipment was very hi impedance as I recall reading somewhere so you do have an impedance mismatch..

I can see no data in a service manual what the nominal impedance of the mic is....have you tried taking the speaker mic apart and id'ing the wires after the circuit to see what the impdance is...then you can match you mic to that impedance...

Check, if the mike-element of the headset is also a electret-type. If it is a dynamic, ceramic or carbon type, it will not work properly.

A little more info on the headset, its a TASC II headset for special forces and they are reasonably new and does have a cable for Saber (except it costs $350). I am sure there is a way to hook up to the Saber but I just couldn't find the right matching setting. To hack a $25 hand mic cable is a much cheaper alternative and I just wish I can figure out the way to do it. The problem is the mic and headset is completely sealed to make it waterproof and I can't open it.
