Radio is a 800 Mhz XTS3000 Model III, H09UCH9PW87BN. Flashcode is 5910084F1E009 (a Watchbuddy radio). Using RSS 9.5.

Trying to program this radio up for a 3600 baud digital system, and it just keep acting wierd. First of all, I've got my trunking system set up just like I do in my model II, same ID, CT, Smartzone with affiliate automatically.

My talkgroups and personalities are set up just the same way. All of the talkgroups are out of range, but I'm right under the damn tower. The control channels are correct as well. It's doing conventional stuff fine. But I can't find any reason why it's not receiving the control channel.

I was able to "make it" rx the control channel, or so I think. I kept keying up and keying up, and it finally let me through. I have tried changing to affiliate with PTT, but nothing changes.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm really stumped on this one.

Almost sounds like the wrong system ID is programmed into it, but you seem sure it's ok. In that case, there are several parameters in the alignment screens which need to be optimized for proper trunking operation (high & low speed data, for instance). I have seen many cases where the conventional channels worked fine, but the high-speed data deviation would not go above 1.5KHz (spec is 3.2-3.5) and thus the trunking wouldn't work. I have no experience with Watchbuddy radios, I don't know if Nick aligns those parameters or not. I'm sure someone else here could tell you. Or perhaps it's a hiccup with his Host/DPS/Flashcode, I read about a few other issues with it. Sounds like it may need a trip to the local MSS, in any case.

Yep, smartzone, but no tx inhibit on any buttons/switch/menu. This is not a receive only radio, for me.

After some time, it seems to stop flashing out of range. But it still gives me the bad beep if I try to key it up, and the other radio is receiving things. Sporadically, it will receive TGs, as it is right this momemt. Decoding IDs on the display and hearing traffic. But if I cut it off, it goes back out of range.

That to me, does make it sound like a possible allignment issue.


He did do great on shipping and sevice. I shipped him a model I, that he received friday, and I had it back as a model III the next day (Fedex on a Saturday).

Is it possible that the talkgroup that you are trying to affiliate to is not enabled on the particular zone that you are trying to afflilate to?

Are you SURE that the radio ID that you are using is enabled in the system controller, and is allowed to affilate to that particular zone/site?

If you are not a legit user on the system, and/or the talkgroup is not allowed to be affiliated on that specific site, then the symptoms that you describe would happen (radio display out of range)

Well, it's needless to say that everyone agrees that although he ships his radios a month after he recieves the $$ and the radios "look" nice, has anyone EVER received a radio which has a functional flashcode with NO problems, NO features that work incorrectly, etc??

Seems to me that he should advertise his radios as capable of the world, but the following features might work, might work improperly, or not at all.

If I'm gonna spend $1000 on a radio, I'm better off with an astro saber from ebay and flat rate repair it, or even an XTS radio for that matter, but if it's parts built then I am not sure if the general public would be able to get it accepted there.

ANyone care to comment? I am in NO way bashing him, I just found it puzzeling why people keep buying the radios from him and the come here to express their concerns over problems with the radio(s)???

And offer a radio w/o the otar, etc and such which are useless features, or at least offer two flashcode options.

Yes, the radio ID is in the system controller, and I am a legit user of the system....It is a single site system.

Your first question puzzles me though, not sure what you mean there.

I am probably wrong, but I don't think you'd have to have Smartzone enabled if it's just a single site system...

No, you are correct. There's no benefit in setting a single site system to SmartZone. At least, none that come to my mind. That said, the radio should still work.

Jay, Is this an 800MHz system, or is it OBT (other band trunking)??

Just an update on what happened....

Yes, it was a problem with improper alignment of some of the data stuff. As i said, the radio worked fine in conventional. Sent it back to him, was aligned and came back working fine on a 3.6k astro system.

As for why they had this set up for Smartzone with a single site system, I don't know.

So...This is my first piece of Astro gear. Might have to pick up some UHF stuff if this works out well.
