What is the "sqwak" at the beginning of a radio transmission from a portable or mobile radio called when u key up the mic? And can an HT600 or MTX810 perform this function? And does anyone know what type of 800mhz portable will do this application?

I'm a little unclear on whether you mean from the transmitter's point of view, or the receiver's. Either way, you're probably talking about MDC or similar signalling, which can be set to precede voice traffic, sounding much like a "sqwak" if the receiving radio is not programmed to mute it. The transmitting radio can be programmed to emit a tone until the MDC has been transmitted, letting the user know he can now speak, although it doesn't sound much like a "sqwak". You also may be referring to the "talk permit tones" that a trunking radio can be programmed to emit when it's ready to let you start speaking on the voice channel. So, in short, any trunking or MDC capable radio can be set to do what you're asking.

I think I am talking about MDC. Our dispatch center has a console with an LCD display that shows what cruiser is calling by showing a number on the display when the cruisers mic is "keyes up". Our MTX810 portables do not emit this "sqwak" and we can not tell what portables are transmitting. Do you know if the MTX810 is able to do MDC or if the HT600 can do MDC?

The HT600 is a guaranteed "NO" for MDC signalling. You had to get the higher tier MT1000 with the MDC option board for that. Unless there's a third party option board out there that I don't know about. Anyone?

As far as the MTX810 goes, that's an early trunking radio which was capable of basic conventional operation, but no MDC that I've ever seen. If you are using the 810s on a trunked system, there are dispatch consoles available which will show trunking radio IDs or corresponding aliases, no MDC required.

Remember not only MDC sounds like a sqwak, GStar realy sounds like more of a sqwak than MDC dose.
Is your dispatch center made up of Motorola or Ge Consoles?

Either way, his radios in question won't do it.

Do a search for "Midian Electronics."

They sell a very small board that will go into most portable and mobile radios to give them MDC capability.

We used a dozen of their boards a while back trying to salvage some Kenwood radios from the scrap pile and ended up with more problems that they were worth. During this trial period we installed an MDCStar board made by a company called Cimmaron Technologies and they were in fact a pretty descent product for the price.

Yes signalling for these radios have been out there for some time. Big "m" was
exspensive for MT1000 etc so after market
suppliers were making low cost signal units
and scramblers. "M" was out to lunch when they first come out.Like the tempco
head set with motorola name on it. 3X
the cost of others when we did our homework.

THAT SQUAK SOUND YOU HEAR IS MDC1200 SIGNALING. IT CAN BE SET UP TO SEND OUT THE RADIO ID NUMBER ON KEYUP OR DEKEY.
