hi i have a new astro saber charger, i have a motorola battery that charges ok in it, but doesnot take a full charge, it is fairly old. now i have a WW associates brand new battery that goes green after aboyt 15 minutes. the first WW battery did the same thing, the second WW battery went flashing red several seconds after placing it in the pocket, the 3hird battery, came directly from WW in new york tested on an analyzer and it too, only charges for 15 minutes then turns green. is there an adjustment in the charger i can tweak to change how pickey it is being? those who feel the need to tell me just use a motorola battery can save thier post, i already know that is an option, just trying to get this brand new batt going. any help would be great.

What's the P/N of the charger?

If it's the rapid charger and the battery has a fairly good charge the charger switches to trickle (green light comes on) at 80%. Takes another 12-15 hours to bring it up to 100%.

Okay, let's try this then:

(From a Motorola Service Bulletin posted 11-7-00)

This Bulletin Number is PSB F-461
APC - 256
Date: February - 1995
EXPIRES: December - 1995

Memo To: PSB Mailing List

From: Radio Products Group/Product Services, Plantation

Subject: Saber Single Unit Charger - Contact Misalignment

Symptoms: Batteries do not begin charging when placed into a defective charger. In some cases Œreseating¹ the battery may start the charging cycle, often no charging LEDs are lit.

Cause: A processing problem was identified resulting in misaligned contacts. Corrective action has been taken to address the vendor issue.

Chargers Affected: Single unit Saber Chargers, NTN4734A and NTN4786A manufactured in October and November, 1994 may be affected. The datecode is stamped on the bottom of charger directly under the pocket area, to aid in identification of chargers requiring the rework. Chargers marked with a dot on the label on the bottom of the charger (and/or the outside of the shipping box on the bar code label) will not require the rework.

Corrective Action: The following field modification is recommended. Please verify that the datecode and symptom criterion are matched before proceeding. New chargers are available upon request under standard warranty administration, but backorders due to material shortages are anticipated.

1. Be sure the unit is unplugged.
2. Remove four Phillips screws from bottom.
3. Turn unit over and remove top housing.
4. Remove ribbon cable from positioning tab.

Important: Note the positioning of the contact assembly board and the four contacts.

5. Gently lift the contact assembly board out, being careful not to damage contacts.
6. Place a spacer, part number 4305861Y01 into each of the two recesses, to the left and right of the center support post where the contact assembly board was removed (see diagram on back).
7. Carefully place bottom edge of contacts behind pocket slot wall and slide contact assembly board down into its original position.
8. Push board down to reseat.
9. Tuck ribbon cable behind positioning tab.
10. Replace top housing, be sure that wires are dressed over main board to prevent pinching.
11. Reinsert four Phillips and torque at four to six inch pounds.
12. Plug in and check unit.
13. Mark bottom of charger on label with a red dot to denote rework complete.

Parts and level one repair is authorized by warranty for chargers that meet the date code criterion. Contact your local Service Representative to arrange for this modification.

If this doesn't help, check your PM's; I got one other card to play 8)
