Here's a strange one, about satellite TV

My mother just purchased an RV, don't know why, we already had one we let rot into the ground, but that's another story....

How does a mobile auto-tracking satellite reciever work, and is it something a person with too much free time and some radio knowledge can duplicate? Anybody know any resources to attempt such an endeavor?

It's a three part question, many thanks to a person that can answer them all.

Ok here it goes..hope this helps..

Auto tracking..will allow you to automaticly aquire the sats position in the sky..YOU MUST BE SITTING STILL to aquire the sat and watch tv. This unit is programmed with sat locations, and uses gps (of where you are) to get the sat coordinates and move the dish to the proper sat. $300-$800 approx cost. Mfgrs wiengartz

In-motion.. This unit also uses GPS to track the sat. You can use this system as you TRAVEL down the road. It always knows where you are (GPS) and where the sat is. $1000.00-$4000.00. They are not cheap. Mfgrs moovin-view, trac-vision, KVH, Datron

In motion high speed internet.. same as abuve, but tv and internet
$3000.00-$7000.00 approx cost.

YIKES!

Anybody got some ideas on how to homebrew the equipment (obviously I'm going to have to buy service somewhere if I use digital)? I'm sure if it can be done, somebody on this board has a way of doing it.

DO you need an auto tracking unit or just one when your stationary?

If stationary, a normal dish can be aimed in a few minutes with minimal tools.

Heh??

Direcway offers an RV solution for Satellite Internet coupled with TV. I think the equipment total is Maybe $700 with a little for installation with a service fee from $50 - $150 a month depending on what you get.

I don;t know exactly how it works but they are happy to talk about it with anyone....

You have to be careful with directway. Its satationary only and is not meant to be removed and reinstalled. When properly aimed, you then must call in the "noc" for a certification and a cross pole check. That usually takes an hour on the phone. If you fail to do this and you are caught, fcc will get involved and begin looking at your installation. Remember, you have now installed a microwave transmitter, and the installer must obey all laws of microwave trans installation or you could seriously hurt someone. Also, if you fail to cross-pole, you can interfere with other sats, causing more headaches from the FCC. This is strictly for the internet portion of the dish. Direct tv is not a transmitter, therefore these laws do not apply..

P.S. the sat that provides internet and direct tv at the same time is the s-l-o-w-e-s-t sat in the sky for the internet. Dial up would be 100 times faster..
