Batboard

Anyone ever seen one of these NMN6166CSP01 Saber speaker mics? It has a box about 1" X 3/4" X 1/2" off to the side where the connector clips on the radio. Sure makes it bulky in comparison to the plain connector.

I took the connector apart and saw three wires that connect internally to it. Can't figure out what the purpose of it is? It's a molded piece so I guess I won't know unless I get the hacksaw or drill out.
