CPS help

Post by scoops »

Had astro cps 2.5 working fine. Received the latest/greatest cps 3.0 and decided to install it. This required uninstalling 2.5. Now I get communication failed with radio. Tried putting 2.5 back, same thing. Tried 2 ribs, xts and as3, same results. It appears the com port is busy and I can't tell from what or how to free it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance

Go into control panel, and make sure Com ports are enabeled.

Go into the CPS, and make you have selected the right comport.

If your 'puter has two ComPorts, try the other port. If that fails, then go into the CPS, and select other comport. Most Computers (older??) have two physical comports.

There is a small DOS program that tests comports - I forget the name at this time

Sounds silly, but make sure you reboot after installing CPS ver. 3.0. Not sure if 2.5 vs. 3.0 uses different default ComPort settings - i doubt it, but again recheck it to make sure. Sometimes its the simple things we overlook. :D

I've had my Comports lockup sometimes with my external 56K modem, and the only way to free it back up was to reboot the computer.

Might also check your BIOS, and make sure you have enabeled you comport(s). I highly doubt that the BIOS got changed, but if all else failed, check it.

If that don't work, then give us some more info on your computer's configuration - Like OS, speed, RAM, network connection (ISP, cable, DSL, ISDN, T1, T3, etc).

I went to BIOS, everythings ok there. When I go to system info, i see the port is busy. I don't know what device/program is using it.
I did reboot after the uninstalll/install. I've tried other com ports.I've reinstalled the com port drivers. The system is an AMD 750,Tyan S2390 mainboard, 384 ram windows XP home, cable modem using NIC card. The CPS is original motorola. The rib's are cloned. One used a rj45 to serial adaptor. the other a regular serial cable.
Thanks

Try uninstalling any & all CPS, re-boot, then check & see if the COM port is still busy. If it appears ok, you'll have to give Motorola a call, because I have no idea how/why the CPS is doing that. If it still shows as busy, then try going to 'Start'-->'Run' and type in "MSCONFIG". It's a handy Windows Configuration Utility. Checkout the 'Startup' folder to see what programs are being loaded upon computer startup. See if there's any program that might be using a COM port. If you find something, uncheck the box next to it to disable it upon reboot. You may have to try disabling several different startup programs before you find the offender. If doing this doesn't seem to help, then go to the 'Services' folder. This shows all services which the computer is currently running. Under the 'status' column, you will see whether the service is currently running or not. You might want to check the 'Hide all Microsoft Services' box, to get rid of most of the services showing. What remains will be a list of all non-Microsoft programs which are active. One of these must be what's using the COM port. You can disable the processes one at a time & see if it frees the COM port. If that doesn't do it, then it may be a Microsoft service which is causing the problem, in which case you have a lot of services to check through, but remember only the ones that show 'running' in the status column need to be looked at, the 'stopped' services won't have the COM port busy. Good luck, hope this helps.

To all that tried to help, again thanks.
I ended up installing a physical com2/serial port and all is working again. When I find out whats up with com 1 I'll post it.

Not sure what OS he is running, but MSCONFIG does not work with Windows 2000.
