It's definately a very nice radio, rOf. But, it is virtually the same price as an ASTRO Specrtra W7 dash mount---about $4,700 as equipped with DES-OFB. So, why not just buy an ASTRO Spectra?

I have one of the 5317 VHF models.

They gave it to me, and I won't take it. It is the most "user unfriendly" radio I have encountered in a long time. It is not intuitive in it's operation, and worse than mother M in operation.

It's even worse to program...

Just my 2 pesos worth.

However - all you do to get digital is to tell it the channel is digital, and boom! It is. Not nearly the "options" selection of mother Ms digital. Just say it's digital, and then 2 EFJs can talk to each other.

I haven't had a chance to see if they'll talk to an Astro yet.

I have used it along with an 5100 series portable on a 9600 baud omni-link system and the radio does work and play good except for some audio issues.
Also the radio needs to go through a full shut down seq otherwise it goes loco next time you try and fire it up.
All in all it talks good with the other M radios on the system and for your price it was a much more affordable method then going with M.
We liked it due to it being the size (well a little it bigger) than a maxtrac that does digital.

When we priced them out (equipped with DES-OFB) in a small quantity (six mobiles), we were quoted around $4,700 each, which is virtually the same as the Motrorola list for a W7 ASTRO Spectra equipped with DES-OFB.

I love them. Simple to program and simple to operate. Same for the 5300 portable. What I love most about them (EFJ), is that they have been very responsive to enduser needs and welcome your input. The folks at EFJ are easy to talk to and most important, they listen to the customer; even the customer with a small order. Seems the feds like them as well with all of their multi-million dollar orders lately. Texas DPS has about 1000 or so portables in the field. The folks in Waseca must be doing something right.

I have a 5100 and 5300. I like them and find the
programming easy. One problem is system keys for
the software. The Moto system keys won't work. Anyone
found around this roadblock?

Moto system keys will not work on the EFJ model. You'll need to contact your local EFJ dealer who will secure a system key for your radios direct from EFJ.

The EFJ Mobile Will Support Omni-Link, w/ No Problem, But it must be ordered as an option, the KVL Cable is EFJ Model #: 585-5000-938, It will connect to the KVL3000, I do not know if the older DX versions will work as we have not tried connecting the DX version. The encryption modules used are standard astro spectra modules. As for the pricing, I think you need to find a dealer who will give you good pricing. I know we don't sell them that High.

What about the STEALTH 25 501x or 510x (don't recall)?

What do you guys think of that one?

The software seems to support the CSQ Network ID and it looks like a fairly neat radio. I'm anxious to get my hands on one to see what it's like.

Does anyone have a KVL to radio schematic for this thing?

Did anyone ever come up with a schematic to connect a Motorola KVL to one of these?
