Can an astro saber I be converted to a model 2 or 3 with the appropriate display/keypad shield, as well as the appropriate software and codeplug? or do the host/dsp/flashcode/firmware stop one from doing this. I know this is a nice broad question, just wondering wether it's possible like on the standard sabers. I did look in the model info, didn't see anything like this there. Thanks, Will

This is only theoretical. I haven't attempted it.

Assuming you know about cloning radios and transferring flashcodes, I'll suggest that cloning a III model to a I model would probably convert it to a III model.

You could be the first to try it and if you do, be sure to post the results.

Has anyone tried converting a Astro Saber I to a IIR? I picked up a new Astro IIR case and battery for fairly cheap and wanted to make use out of it. Would I be better off looking for a Astro Saber II and recasing it? Thanks

Yes, YES, YES

I converted a Vhf Astro 2 to 3 by replacing the case from a 2 to 3 and dumping a Astro Saber 3 codeplug into it. I should note that my Astro is VSLEP though.

A I model does not have a display board installed. You'd have to get one. All other rules apply as well.

I have converted a few 1's over to three's. You need the front panel with display board and a version of the old Astro saber lab program , I think it's ver:2.00.1 . You can create a codeplug for a three and dump it in once you have built the radio. i discovered that this version of lab will not read newer radios , however it will successfully right to the newer radios.

Any questions, pm me
