So according to the newbie astro primer it says my radio is vslep,,,but it talks to IMBE radios..??? Am I missing something. I am new to this. The features work well on the radio and it has a lot of nice features in it..

It says right in the flash-code decode that IMBE is an installed option.

BTW, you'll probably never find a VSELP XTS anything. VSELP is more likely to be found in an Astro Saber than any other Astro portable.

VSELP is considered crappy compared to IMBE in terms of overall robustness, not to mention Proprietary too.

There were VSLEP XTS as well as some 512k XTS, but as said, rare.

The HOST/DSP are firmware verions in the radio, and work basically the same way as FLASH BIOS would in a PC. Certain radio features will only work in a radio that has a certain HOST/DSP revision.

I'd have to agree about the 3500's. They were released well after IMBE was established as the codec of choice...but you never know. The only instance that I can think of this occuring would be is a VSLEP dept is replacing a bad radio, and wanted a 3500, however I would think that they would be told to grab a XTS3000. I believe there are only 4-5 large departments running VSLEP (Nashville is coming to mind for some reason).

Well you have the right state, however, wrong town. It is Memphis that is VSLEP. Nashville just went to an ASTRO IMBE APCO-25 3600 Baud system in the last quarter of 2001. A town that comes to mind is Cleveland, OH and I think Trenton, NJ.

Memphis supposedly will be upgrading to Smartzone 4 with IMBE voice. Not sure of the timetable. That leaves Cleveland and Trenton as the last holdouts.

VSELP was available on the XTS3000 - probably never was on the newer XTS3500.
