XTS3K Monitoring

I know that this has been addressed before,
but if I may, I would like to take it a level
simpler. I would like to monitor a type II
UHF with an XTS3k. Can I program the freqs
into a conventional personality, then either
disable transmit or put the Xmit freqs on some
nonused ham freq. Then just put all the freqs
into a scan group? I know that it wouldn't
totally follow as if it were being controlled by
a control freq. But would it decode the digital?
Of course it would be set to either mixed mode
or full astro.
When I do this, the little speaker display goes away,
and when the freq is busy the led on the top shows
that there is a signal, but I don't get any audio.
Am I going about this in too much of a Bass Akward
way, or am I missing something critical?
Thanks

Thanks, that got it decoding.
One more dumb question, if I may.
When I turn it to scan. The radio
scans (I think) then gives me the
goof beep after about 14 sec. continuously
until I turn scan off.
Any ideas?

Ha, I just checked the failure message.
It said that I had connected but was
rejected because I was SPAM.
Egad, I've been called many things before,
but I think thats a new low.

Really, if you want to monitor an analog, or especially an IMBE digital Trunked system, IMHO I'd strongly recommend that you go out and get yourself a late Christmas present: a PRO-96! The XTS3K Conventional radio will be HORRIBLE in trying to hamfist it and manually jump around trying to follow any given conversation on a Trunked system. Also, don't forget that it is REALLY important to be able to dial up any particular Talk Group via the ultra convenient alpha tag labelling (eg, VICE, Traffic, Narcotics, SWAT, etc.). You can't do this with a Conventional XTS!
If you can wait just a few months or so, the Rat Shack is sure to drop the price to maybe $399, or hopefully less. With any luck, it'll probably be $299 by Christmas 2004.
Like you said, you are NOT going to be Transmitting, so why fight it so hard?

Astromodat,
I just got me a 96. LAPD and Orange County fire in astro sound: (do I dare say it)?..95% as good as an AS3. Ofcourse the audio output is not as loud or robust...but ive got Multiband/Multitrunk/Astro RX all in one radio. I just got some 1800 MAH NIMH batteries for it as well.

There was a link recently on "Strong Signals" that indicated LA County had ordered thousands of UCMs from Motorola. I doubt they did this for the fun of it...
