Anybody have any clue what software to use for the portable TK-280 and the mobile TK-880?

Any ideas about wiring schematics too???

Kenwood "80 series" radios use KPG-49D programming software. All the radios in this series use the same software, no matter if it is a portable or mobile.

KPG-49D Software programs all of the following radios.

TK-280 VHF Conventional / LTR Portable
TK-380 UHF Conventional / LTR Portable
TK-480 800 MHz Conventional / LTR Portable

TK-780 VHF Conventional / LTR Mobile
TK-880 UHF Conventional / LTR Mobile
TK-980 800 MHz Conventional / LTR Mobile

Is The KPG 56D

Kenwood RSS KPG-56D WILL NOT Program any 80 series radio. It is used for the 60 series mobile radios and 70 series portable radios only.

Wes is correct. There is even a windows version of the KPG49D out now.

Hope some of you guys & gals maybe able to assist me in programming a tk 272g . Im "brand" new with kenwood radios but have experience with motorola radios.
I dont have any instructions on the tk 272G so Im in need of help.

All Kenwood RSS's are available online, just go to there site, and you can find them.

Kenwood makes all their RSS for Amatuer radios ONLY avaliable to the public on their website.

Commercial RSS is avaliable to download from a special site for dealers only.

The proper RSS for the TK-272G is KPG-56D

A different Kenwood question:

I have a pair of TK-860's (G or H, don't know). I built a Kenwood RIB out of a Dallas IC. I seem to get levels ok on both sides of the IC but the radio seems to need to be in programming mode. Does someone have instructions on how to put this thing into program mode?

I also had the instructions to make the TK860 into a front programmable radio, tried it and it didn't work. Something about soldering a jumper across to test points on the display. This would be cool too but not necessary. Can someone help out on this?

I just programmed one of these and didn't have to put it in a program mode. I just read/wrote it.

I have never programmed a Kenwood before.

Will I need a RIB to program the TK-280 and TK-880??

I seen someone program these before and use ribless cables.

Does anyone know where to find these cables?

You will not need a RIB to program any Kenwood radio. Each programming cable has a chip built in, located inside the DB25 connector.

When programming a 272-G/372-G, use the TK-270G-370-G option this way you can put 128 channels into it instead of just 32. Just a little help . Thats one reason we have so many Kenwood's around here, I can create a codeplug, without having the radio in front of me and the software/cables are dirt cheap.

Here's a little Kenwood tip. (Don't laugh. I thought the guy who told it to me was nuts also, but it works!) If you're programming a TK280 and it wont read or write, moisten the radio end of the cable. Licke the end of your finger and just rub it over the contacts and it works beautifully. DO NOT lick the end of the cable as you may get a small shock.
