Rumor out there has it that after 1/1/04, you won't be able to call Parts ID Group without a valid account number.

Get your MOL accounts now while you can!

Hmm.. When I called parts ID today, they said "Hello Jonathan, this is so and so how can I help you?"

Go ANI!

I've found that sometimes *67 won't mask who you are...

Nothing will block you on toll-free calls, it's ANI not caller ID. Just like 911.... the phone company feels that if the company is footing the bill the deserve to know who is calling.

*67 only blocks Caller ID.

ANI is completely seperate from caller ID.

But I bet you already knew that.

Same info different databases. It's only E-911 capable PSAPs can get all the goodies, like address and such. Phone companies get really weird though about who can get any info from that.

But back on topic... How can they restrict that to account holders only? Even if a customer doesn't use a local dealer but wants to call them directly why block them from something like this? Doesn't that discourage potential customers?

Good point.

I thought only agencies that had a valid use for it could get it....

I guess not...

Wonder how much ANI would cost for my apartment :)

You would never get authorization from a phone company. If they give it to you 1 of 2 things happened. Either you becamea PSAP in your living room. OR.. you spun quite the yarn for customer service at the telco...

PS wtg... 2200 posts

All you need is a toll free number and the right equipment.

OK, my money is on the second of the two. The bad thing about that statement is that I could actually see you pulling it off too.

This is a no brainer. Either Mother /\/\ supplies radios to most of the phone companies out there and uses this to their advantage, or simply because they are Motorola and can do whatever the hell they please in the real world. (They probably told the phone company that it was a matter of "National Security" because they did'nt want to sell anything to "unfriendlies" and needed to know who they were dealing with) Must be nice to have that kind of juice.

On the serious side though, I would think it's just another way for them to build thier incredible customer data base. With all the money they spent on Impact 21, they have control over the dealers, but the ANI also gives them a certain degree of control over the end user. The claim of it being to improve "customer satisfaction" is a crock of $#!t in my eyes since they don't seem to give a damn about anything else other than the bottom line these days. It would'nt suprise me if they take all this info in the not so distan future and open up the company stores again in an effort to squeeze the dealers out and have total control.

A company I worked for had a 1800 number and got the name and number of every incoming call on the line. You could call from a landline with caller ID blocked and it would still come up. We didn't get any addresses but name and number. If you pay the long distance charge you get to choose if you pick up the phone or not.

fyi...

i have friends who use the pre-paid calling cards just for this reason.

the ANI goes to the 1800# for the inbound call placement... but after that... you're going thru the 800# switch for the long distance call....

so whammo- no ANI

i have also seen individual 800#'s set up for ANI (name/fone # only) that were always forwarded to cellular #'s... whammo...got ur fone#...

more than one way to skin that cat

This is just another reason why I would never consider Motorola for new equipment and makes lit a less viable option for used. If you can't get parts, or they are an arm and a leg, when other companies actually want your business, well you know the rest.

I haven't found a phone card yet that will allow you to dial an 800 number.

I know this has been driven into the ground but.
ANI= Automatic Number Idnenafation
A system that when dialed verbally speaks the number that you are calling from.

When you dial 1 800 numbers your number are calling from is sent before the ring is sent. Most big call centers have systems that direct your call to an answering position with a terminal that is displaying your info by the time that they answer the phone.

The 911E system is something all together difrent.

Ok.. I'll bite. What's the point? ANI info is how Caller ID works as well. BUt through a different system/database. Any system that can recall and display a phone number would be a flavor of ANI.. by definition at least.
BrienD wrote:The 911E system is something all together difrent.
Right. Because E-911 gets ANI/ALI data. Same thing with more features. It doesn't stop at name and phone number it gives you name, phone number, address, town/municipality, and ESN (Emergency Services Number) as well any other pertinent info the phone company puts in (APT 1, Payphone - Lobby etc...) along with the type of phone system the call is coming in on.

I didn’t mean to sound like a b#** head. When I see the ANI reference I got confused. ANI does not have a database it speaks the number you are dialing from.
800 numbers are similar to caller ID. In that they send info.
And yes they all transmit info of one sort or another by one way or another.
It doesn’t make a difference.

Yea Brian is right... it's commonly misused, I do it all the time as people seem to understand faster when you say ANI. ANI is just a local number you call that will recite back where you are calling from.

I think you are thinking of ANAC.

Automatic Number Announcement Circuit.
