Paris Hilton Video---FREE!
Here is a link that has a very interesting video that discusses a
Public Safety WiFi System in Yakima County, WA that covers 650 Sq Miles! 1.5 Mb/s mobile data---makes ASTRO data look like molasses! They are also going P25, as the gal in the video discusses.
Wow!
Enjoy!

What, that man and the little kid get down and dirty on camera or something?ASTROMODAT wrote:(At the very end of the video, there is a Paris

Interesting stuff, but those guys need to learn how to frame a shot, and perhaps invest in a microphone.
It's so sad when you see public safety agencies being misled about a system like this. A non-licensed system like this looks good if you are the first one in, but just like all other bands like this (ie 49 Mhz cordless) this band too will become so busy that a "wide area" will become useless for the intended application.
It might be OK for the dog catcher, but not for public safety.
It usually stems from people in charge that have little knowledge making critical decisions that potentialy put peoples life at risk.
So sad.

Very true, and I agree, albeit this place is REALLY out in the sticks (as you could probably tell by the Police Chief's demeanor, etc.). However, what I think is interesting is that when they "upgrade" to ASTRO Data, they will go from their current data speed of around 2 Mb/s with WiFi, to a mind blowing 4800 baud! That'll be inpressive when they want to send mug shots, and the like!

It is very odd that they didn't talk to the person that actually built the system. He's been installing various microwave and 802.11 sites for over 10 years. Before that he was a broadcast engineer and a mobile radio tech. I've worked for him many times (and a few times he's worked for me), been housemates with him and I've considered him one of by best friends for over 25 years. Trust me when I say that he knows the limitations of 802.11. The entire system is not 802.11. There is fiber, licensed microwave and other systems involved. I won't go too deep into the details because it does carry law enforcement and court data.
I've notified Dean of this thread and I hope that he'll reply.
