Hi Guys,

Looks like an ordinary "square-tail" mic - MICOR, SYNTOR (and X), anything with System-90 accessories, and the aforementioned MX convertacom.. but with red plastic.
I was told once that Moto made the red mics for FD use, but I've seen them all over.. we had a few in the Highway Patrol where I used to work. I had a "round-tail" (Motrac/Motran)here once upon a time, but I haven't looked in that box in a while!

Illinois State Police used these right up till they got rid of the Syntor X a few years ago.

ISP used them on the ISPERN radio, so the troopers could tell the regular dispatch radio apart from the ISPERN radio. It stemmed from a long time ago when they were using Motrac's, then Micor's and so on...

ISPERN (155.475) is required by state law in all police vehicles in Illinois, and most agencies have/had a seperate radio just for ISPERN. ISP got the red mics for that radio.

I have 2 ISP Syntor X radios at home, complete with the red mics.

I've seen that type of mic in black, red, grey and yellow from the factory.

Any other factory colors out there?

We used them too. We had 2 radios in one car, one for our lowband radios ( A Long time ago...) , the other for LEERN, I always thought Moto ( and we had a few GE mic's as well ) made them so you could tell which radio was which.

I once had a M salesman who had a yellow mike on his Motrac. He never worried about parking tickets in Illinois - professional courtesy, the officer thought. M also produced a bright orange case for the HT220 - local RR used them for supervisors so it would be obvious if some other employee 'borrowed' them.

Hi guys,

This Mic is from a Motorola MCX100, it fits into the rear of the radio body next to the speaker plug and power connector hence the angled plug. However cant tell you why its red !! I can say for sure that is mic is NOT from a Syntor 9000 series as they have a 3 row D type section connector and this ones very crude compared to the connector on the back of the 9000 head.

Hope this helps.

A Mike for the MCX100 will also fit the MX, Syntor, Syntor XX series, Mitrek, Micor, type 90 accesories, the back plug on the MCX1000, MT500 and several other radios or convert-coms. I have one from the old days that was dark blue and another that was black...I have seen the red... so how many different colors did these come in..??? I know the most colorful range in handheld was at one time the MT500 , it came out also in Blaze Orange, Blue, Yellow , in production, I have seen 1 MT500 in white.( no whale or Ahab jokes) .. as to the mikes maybe it was with the idea of more than 1 radio to color code..if not it still was not a bad idea.....Someone with some old manuals might be able to see if these where standard options or available thru SP or special order?

Hey.

I wonder if they did a 'Flashing Red' one , so you could take direct calls from Commissioner Gordon.

Sorry about the Bat-man/wing pun!
