Wasn't me either. I thought it was a well laid out 'how-to' for labbing a radio, an expansion on what's been said many times in many other threads here. I saw no reason to mod it in any aspect.

Here's the issue:

You can do all sorts of stuff to modify products and so forth. Not just with radios. There will probably never be a 100% foolproof setup - they will make it harder to the point of which it may not worth be looking for "holes."

The fact of the matter is there rarely is instructions posted that say this is how to do x,y,z. Serial Number modification is something that's a whole other relm.

We have to be careful where we step. I'm not saying the thread or post may or may not return - I'm not sure at this time.

But we have to be careful, and take things into consideration.

looks like protocol from now on is to save threads like that locally just in case.

As I read that post, and then saw it was gone, I did think about it. With all the RSS stuff, the "Nick" incident, etc, information such as what was posted does put us in a quandry as far as the board, and civil liability.

I think had LAB RSS not been the tool to do such modifications, it wouldn't be a big deal. As LAB is a heavliy restricted propriety software program, that has the potential for legal issues.

I agree for most of us, that post was a great one, as we like to play with our radios. I don't think anyone respectable here is going to go modify public safety radios with a 100 new options, but that isn't a chance that Motorola is going to take...after all, its their name on the radio and no doubt if something goes bad, they will be named in some lawsuit or some incident. All the plantiff has to say "They new about this weakness and didn't do anything to prevent Joe Radio guy from modifing the radio that failed and cost him/her their life". M has deep pockets, and they want to protect them.

maybe we need a 'member (in good standing only) area'... one that we can post these things without worry of harassment... from anyone including M. there are a few of us who are a bit above the average batlabber. we should have our own area... one where we can swear and spit and do whatever we want! a land we can call our own! we'll call it Phat City! we'll form our own society based on crack, whores, and gambling!

ok... maybe i am getting ahead of myself, but hey... the private section makes sense. hell, i'd throw 10-20 bucks towards it to be a member. god knows i use this site enough... even though my post numbers may not reflect that.

You can blame me for the disappearing of the thread, i pm'ed one of the moderators and asked him to look it over/remove it.
Why you ask, well i felt bad that after posting, it the answer you listed requiored you to stick your neck out as far as putting out info that could get you a nasty letter from the legal department of some major company. I did not want to bring attension or trouble to you or the group, so i emailed one of the moderators and asked if he could look over the post and remove it..
I hope you are not mad i appreciate you taking the time to just sit down and explain it to me (and everyone) but being new to batlabs i thought it best not to do somthing to cause problems. I will be willing to take the criztism for getting this post hacked, but i assure you Rof and others looking for the info that I had good intensions in mind and did not mean to bring about unwanted censorship.

Rof, could you maybe PM some of us with the info you posted? I am very interested in that information for my own education.

Not a good idea...! Its better having everything out in the open and legal. Otherwise, Motorola will wonder what we are hiding, and if we have the need to hide it, then it must be illegal.

I hardly think that's called for. The person who made the original post asked to have it removed because he is new to the board and was concerned about violation of board rules.

Shaun's posted response contains sensitive information - just how Motorola might respond is a judgement call.

Motorola charges big bucks for these upgrades. Explaining how to enhance a current production Motorola product without Motorola getting these dollars could be a BIG problem [injury to plaintif].

This would also apply to an out of production product if the upgrades are still being sold - and upgrades for Astro Saber ARE still being sold.

Alex said he is considering the matter - let's give it a rest until he decides.

Here's my measly 2 cents worth:

Although I think exploring your own equipment is a good experience and educational, "posting" info how to make a radio do options that Motorola charges for is VERY risky.

Take a look at Direct TV and it's anti-piracy assault. Just posting info how to decode a signal in the air is VERY illegal and cases have been won against regular "Joe Blow Citizen" and not just corperations. For Batlabs to be the median for information how to circumvent a companies intellectual rights will mean big problems for the board. In order to "do an upgrade," you need:

Motorola Software not licensed to you (lab was never licensed to a specific person. Don't mention "we'll make our own"... remember what happened to the makers of Toolkit?)
Interface to a proprietary communications system (SB9600)
Make a radio do things not purchased when available to be purchased... even if it's a pain in the ass for a normal consumer to get an upgrade without 10,000 questions and $2000.

I'm all for knowing your radio and learning. Public Safety employees need to know their tools and equipment because it's there job, and their life depends on it. You as a radio hobbiest should know how your radio works, inside and out to better understand how it works and potential self-repairing. That's how ideas come about.. "Study Groups" and projects....

BUT, publicly posting HOW TO GET AROUND PAYING MOTOROLA... that's just blatenly the wrong way for the board to go.

You had no right what so ever to contact any of the moderators regarding that post, You should have kept your big mouth shut!
