I am looking at a radio on EBay. I wrote the seller and asked about detailed info. About the only thing they knew was that it was a 512K radio. What does it mean to be a 512K radio?
Here is the ebay item number: 3085072710

Whoa! $760 for an untested radio that doesn't even have the Flascode posted. Can you say G A M B L E ?
The 512k is referring to the Flashcode memory size.
The only thing you can determine from the posters description (or lack there of) is that it is a W7 800 MHz trunk mount radio.
It appears that the cables and accessories are not included so that is an added expense. It does not state what Flashcode is in the radio so you cannot tell if it has the features you need.
My gut feeling - - forget this one.

512 refers to the internal memory size available to the vocoder board (If I'm correct) I believe the IMBE radios are 1 meg and the VSELP mode radios are 512 but again I'm no astro expert and that could be wrong. However it does refer to the memory in the radio.
I'm in Kansas where we're still communicating with drums and smoke signals.

Not knowing the firmware version of the 512, it could be either VSELP or IMBE... if it even has digital firmware to begin with.
Things you need to know about an astro radio:
- Model Number
- Host Firmware Version
- DSP Firmware Version including the letter. (That 1 letter makes a LOT of difference!!!!)
- Vocon Size (512k or 1meg)
- Flash Code
I can't say it enough... a flashcode is ONLY A LABEL. With all the hacked radios out there, the firmware is becoming a WAY MORE important item to look for.
Chiefhal. I have a W7 Astro Spectra Dash mount for sale if you're interested. PM me if you are.
