800 Mhz Control Channels

Post by chiefhal3 »

Is there a specific range Motorola limits its control channels to on 800 mhz trunking systems? I have two radios, one a GTX Mobile and the other an MTX8000 B3 that will not accept a control channel of 868.4000. I think that is with in the operating range of the radio but I don't know if there is a different limit for control channels.

866.0125 - 870.000 MHz was originally reserved for Public Safety trunked systems. And since the MTX and GTX were neither marketed nor sold as radios approved for public safety, they can't be programmed in that range according to spec.

However, it's pretty easy to program these radios up to 870 if you have access to lab, or clone in a codeplug that was modified using lab.

Well, I certianly prefer the spectra over the GTX but I wasn't aware it wasn't "approved" I guess is the right word to use for public safety. Our Sheriff's Office has about a hundred or so of them. They are just so much cheaper than Spectras and for the most part work well if you are just local and have limited talk groups you need to talk on. They work on our system's channels just fine but I was programming in a neighboring system and it wouldn't take one of the four control channels, it just happened to be the one I mentioned earlier.

What radios do you own?: XTS2500, Sabers, Spectras

Earlier versions of the GTX sw "would" allow 866+ frequencies to be entered.
