CAN ASTROSABER with IMBE be configured for VSELP compatibility?

say someone buys a IMBE AS radio on ebay, and wants to use it to talk to some friends with vselp AS radios, can the newer radio be setup to toggle between IMBE/VSELP?

iknow ihave said the same thing several times in this post....

Nope. One or the other, not both.

With IMBE being the standard, stick with IMBE. VSLEP to IMBE isn't an expensive upgrade (200-300 last time I checked). That would be better in the long run.

wazzz -

I would tend to put my money on no.

If we break down the logic of how the radio works, and what we know about how flashport works, we can figure out the following:

The firmware is the basic instruction set that the radio uses to operate. The firmware contains what features your radio is able to do - Think about the firmware on the level of your computer BIOS. It tells your computer how to turn on and look for information to boot from.

We then have a codeplug. The Codeplug contains the specific's for your radio. Frequencies, features, channel names, scan lists, etc.

The radio also has a flashkey in it, which says you can do this feature or that feature.

When you switch your radio's channel, it reads the data in the codeplug through the processor (which get's the basis of it's operating ability from the firmware) to see what it is supposed to do. If the firmware has instructions that say you must modulate a signal as such, it sends the command(s) to the DSP, and it modulates the data/voice/whatever to it's specification.

Now, if your firmware has a certain set of instructions, then it will only do the set of instuructions it knows how to do.

So, if you have a radio that speaks IMBE, it's in the firmware. You would have to find a way to downgrade the firmware to something that is vselp compatable. Now, the only way that you could do this is to find a way to blank and re-write the chip in the radio. That's not really practical. The easiest way around this issue is to do two things:

1) Purchase a board from M that isn't flashed (yeah, i doubt that's gonna be possible)

2) Purchase a new vocoder off someone on the board who has swapped theirs out, or look around on ebay. Put new vocoder into radio, tune, align, program.

Because of the space limitations and the lack of need for there to be two voice protocals in a single radio, the portable will only do one or another (IMBE or VSELP.)

I think your best bet is #2.

While this might be a somewhat lenghty answer, hopefully, it helps with the why you should choose #2.

you did a very good job of explaining, and i understand now how the imbe and veselp relate to core firmware design

thanks ALEX...

I'm sure someone would trade their VSELP radio for your IMBE....

I see this being within the relm of possibilities. The IMBE radio is worth more, but value is what you see within it.
