Hello,
I use a public safety speaker mic on my HT1000 and I was just curious if I could get by without the antenna on the unit and just use it like a standard mic. How I intended to do this was to cut the extra nipple on the connector off as I have noticed the standard speaker mics do not have this nipple. By doing this would it still work properly or would it completely disable the sp/mic.

That should work fine. But before you do that, check to see which antenna works better on your radio.
