I'll be flying halfway across the country in a couple of months. I want to take my Motorola Radio with me in my checked luggage or Carry-On. Has anyone ever had any problems taking radio equipment through the airport?

Carry it on your belt just like you would a cell phone. I have been carrying for years and have never had an issue.

I want to avoid carrying it through on my belt. The aircraft i'm flying on is small, and I can barely fit in the seats without anything on my belt...

I take my radio into the airport all the time, since I work at one (Detroit Metro Airport), even though my work doesn't require use of a radio at all.

That aside, send it through just like anything else, PDA, cell phone (well laptops have to be in their own tote) and you'll have no problems. I've never been questioned by the TSA- most of them are pretty stupid about radios though. They once thought my XTS3K model II was one of ther XTS5k model I's until they saw the display, so I guess I'd only be wary about having the same radio as the TSA (even though my radio is the same as that used by our airport police.

Never had a problem since 9/11 with Kenwood and /\/\ Jedi radios. Put it in your carryon or laptop bag if you have one and send it through the scanner. No one has asked what it is. This includes LAX, Orlando, O'Hare and Minneapolis which may have a bit tighter security at the checkpoint.

I recently flew from West Palm Beach to Atlanta & back with 4 Jedis in a carry on bag. [Needed 4 simplex radios so 4 vans could keep in touch on the road]. Those TSA guys couldn't care less, but they hassled my 82 yr old Aunt because of all her jewelry. Enjoy the trip. GARY N4KVE

I've not had any problems - except at JFK once, where someone was insistant that I couldn't carry it on. I grabbed a pilot and was like - is there any problem with bringing this on board an aircraft - he said, oh hell no, just as long as it's off. The TSA guy got off his high horse.

I've carried a lot of different stuff through security - some will ask oh what's that for, or whatever... the guy in Orlando in september said oh wow, those look exactly like our batteries when he saw a couple of xts style batteries in my camera bag.

I wouldn't worry about it. carry your amateur radio license with you just in case - or your work ID that would say to someone, oh this person should have this...

I just got back from a business trip tonight. I didn't carry a radio, but I carried my PRO-96 scanner, mp3 player, battery chargers and accessories in a carry-on bag through security at two airports, one of which was Dulles. I didn't have a problem at any of the airports.

I always carry from 1 to 10 radios on business trips every week. I have only had 1 problem, At Long Beach I was carrying a Primary Lithium battery in my checked bag, the sniffer said it was C$, they asked me to get off the plane & explain, lucky I had ID and I knew the cops. They still took it till I came back.
