I have never delt with Mo-depot. Had to send a spankin new HT1550xls UHF back for a "white noise" durning reception. How long should I plan on the radio being gone or replaced?
It's been a week already
Thanks!

UPS time there. About 3-5 days or so then UPS back. Two weeks or so wouldn't be a bad time. If you sent it out via a MSS, its whenever they decide to send things out.

There isn't any Motorola Depot anymore.

Sore subject I'm sure for you Dave...for the rest here is where things are:
All radios are still being shipped to the Elgin Depot, or at least, the old address. Some units are being forwarded from there to the new destination in El Paso, TX. According to a Motorola rep that I spoke with, some units are still being repaired at Elgin until the new depot is up to speed. The whole thing is in transition, and very quietly at that. They know this is going to piss off a lot of people so it's being done very hush-hush. When the new depot is ready to go fully operational, that's when those who need to know are given the new shipping info.
Even those at the MSS level do not yet know about this, unless they heard about it here or ask the direct question to a Motorola rep.
To answer the original question, it's a possiblity that the radio is in El Paso as we speak, instead of Elgin. A phone call requesting the repair status might prove interesting.

Not really a sore subject for me, I was planning to retire anyway. Now I get to retire a little earlier & with severence pay! My last day is officially 2/18.
The transition started at the beginning of this year. The Elgin facility IS in fact a CTDI building. Most likely his radio is here. VERY little is going to Mexico (or El Paso) at this time.

Okay,
Sounds about like 2 weeks then. Just a bit impatient but it did cost me 750.00.
Thanks gang!

The radio. The repair/replacement is warranty.

Just an interesting note-
I sent a CM 300 to Elgin on 12/27/05 for warrenty repair.
It arrived back today (2/03) from El Paso Depot!
Looking at the paper work, El Paso received it 1/10.
Hopefully this isn't a sign of the times

The CM/CP series must be among the first to go. The /\/\ branded and Professional lines thus far have been done at Elgin still. I would expect delays at first during the transitional periods.

well...I got a nice email on this today.....
To All Servicers:
As most of you have heard, Motorola has entered into a contract with Communications Test Design, Inc. (CTDI) to perform subscriber repair services.
In an effort to control costs so that we can continue to provide the best value in subscriber repair services, the decision was made to outsource the functionality of our Radio Support Center.
Please read the email below which describes the processes we would like you to follow. We are in the middle of the transition and are trying to make this as seamless as possible.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
As always, we encourage you to check MOL on a regular basis so that you can keep informed of our progress.
Thank you for your understanding and continued interest in Motorola products and services.
Best Regards:

ELGIN TRANSITION UPDATE
As of January 3, 2006, the Motorola Distribution Center, Infrastructure Repair and Subscriber Repair Operations in Elgin, IL have transitioned all operational management to Communications Test Design, Inc. (CTDI).
While the distribution center and infrastructure repair will remain at the Elgin facility, the subscriber repairs will be moved to CTDI’s repair center in Mexico, which will have an El Paso shipping address for customers. Both the repair center in Mexico and the logistics center in El Paso, TX, are currently operational and have already begun processing repairs on mobile radios. The transition to move the repair of the remaining subscribers from Elgin to El Paso is on schedule and will occur over the first 9 months of 2006.
Currently all subscriber repairs should continue to be sent to the Elgin facility where they will be expeditiously routed to the appropriate repair center. However, beginning on February 10, Motorola Online (MOL) will have several updates. The first will be the capability to provide the correct repair location based on the radio type when the repair request is entered into MOL. During the 9 month transition period, it is possible when multiple radios are being submitted for repair at the same time, they may require shipment to different repair locations (Elgin and El Paso). The second MOL update will provide check boxes for the customer to use to indicate that the radio is either secure/encrypted and/or Factory Mutual (FM) approved. Please encourage your customers to submit all subscriber repair requests through MOL to insure they receive the proper ship to locations and also to insure that the customer’s information is available to the repair facility when the equipment arrives for processing.
All repair pricing and metrics will remain unchanged. Requests for pricing on upgrades or other special projects should be directed to Tammy Knarr. We expect this transition to be seamless, however, if any customer issues do arise, please notify Christine Downey.
Regards,

Funny, if Motorola is closing depots to save money, why don't they just raise their prices some more to overprice themselves out of the whole 2 way market.

Does Kenwood make a radio that will work on a Motorola Trunking System?
Posted: Sun Feb 05, 2006 2:43 pm
by USPSS
Kenwood works on ALL P25 systems (9600) baud is a P25 system. Our radios meet P25 & TIA 102 specs as well as NIST
Seamless, isn't all too seamless at the moment.

The transition is happening, but it isn't going too smoothly. They are sending people to Mexico on a regular basis to try to fix what's happened. While some of it is up, there are still problems to be addressed with the tracking system used and transistioning it off of the Mot servers to the CTDI servers. Some of the Employees that were sent to Elgin (from Mexico) for training have already quit. If your products are going to Elgin, then you're looking at the standard time turn-around... Until the end of March... in which case CTDI will have completely taken over, and then it's anyones guess as to cycle time demands. They should be the same as Motorola, ...should.
I worked at the Elgin Facility, and was officially released from Mot at the beginning of January.
They are trying to make it as painless to the consumer as possible... but it's a cluster!
I have nothing ill to say about Motorola, I may not appreciate what has happened, nor how they have done this too so many of us... end that thought train.
As far as speculation on the Feds, they'll never let the Fed depot leave the country. Matter of security and the such.
I wish y'all the best and hope that this doesn't effect you too badly.

Got an XTS5000 back from the depot today.
It came back brainwashed [typical]
Reloaded stored codeplug.
Radio said "OUT OF RANGE"
Bench tested. Rx & Tx both FOOBAR.
Back it goes.
Whoopee... we're having fun now.

A nice technician at the depot called me yesterday, and we had a chat about a bouncer radio. He gave me his personal phone number to call if I have any more problems with the radio. They are trying to help us.

I had a similar "nice technician" experience with a piece of Fluke test equipment. They were quite friendly until my unit came back the second time.
I called the tech and someone else answered the phone: "Oh, Ed no longer works here. You'll have to talk to customer service."
With all the layoffs and early retirements going on, you might not want to put that phone number anyplace safe, because you'll be throwing it out in March!

I read the posting earlier about having a radio take 12 days just to reach El Paso. I'm guessing it sat in the depot for a couple of days, then went down to El Paso and since it likely had to do some customs stuff the Feds had their hands on it for a while.
As for the techs on the floor for the most part the one who know anything are generally more than willing to share their knowledge. In fact I'd say a good portion of us are looking to just leave the shop here and go do new things. As the "transition" gets more and more fun there will likely be more difficulties. Once everything is complete I personally feel sorry for anyone who needs a radio expedited cause telling the feds at customs to expedite something doesn't always work. LOL
As for MD from what I know MD is keeping it's operations as well as any state required depots like Indiana who had placed the requirement for a Motorola depot in state in order to get the radio contract.
As for the XTS5000 bouncer that is coming back, OUCH!! I've seen some of them and just wonder sometime how they ever made it out of development. Hopefully you'll get a phone call if there seems to be a programming issue.
Good luck all
I hope to post more in the future.

So the radio came back and guess.... No it's not repaired. WTF, did anyone test the dam thing.
So I'm going to try to get my money refunded or the radio REPLACED and not repaired, they obviously cannot or don't know how to fix the white noise issue.

sell it and go buy a Kenwood. At least KENWOOD doesn't outsource their depots to the illegal alien border crossers. They are right here in the good old USA. As is their LMR HQ, right here in metro Atlanta (Gwinnett county). Did I mention they are cheaper?
Lucky for me my MSS is willing to reflash my XTS3000 to ver 8 DSP so I won't have to send it to .25/hour non-English speaking sweat shop employees in some third world nation.
anything to save a buck. Good move Ed Zander. Lemme guess, this is your asset light program at it's peak.
Good luck getting your radio fixed.

Yea, no crap. I'm going to guess that they will not replace the radio. They'll just want to keep fixing it until it no longer under warranty. Then I'll be screwed.
It's to bad. It's not even 2 months old. I had thought better of /\/\. The pisser is that went for repair and they did not even test their work. I wonder how they'd feel if as a firefighter I did that quality of work. I bet they'd sue.
I've got 750.00 in it and I don't think I'd get my money out of it.
We'll see what happens Monday.

I'm a tech for a large public safety agency.
A few weeks ago, I sent out a couple of HT1000's and a couple Minitor V pagers to the normal depot address.
To my surprise, we received them back this week, all repaired and recased. About a week and a half turn-around.

Both of those are still serviced in Elgin.
