I've never had the chance to play around with a 5K, and was wondering if Moto lets you change the "SELF TEST" to say whatever you want it to. Or if there was a hack to do it. I would think when departments are spending $4K+ per radio, motorola would come up with something to make them a little more personal. Maybe this is a thought for future firmware or newer radios entirely. I can see some whackers out there changing theres to "motoSEXY", etc lol. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't available, just wondering if anyone has any "inside information".

Nope, cant change the SELF TEST text... You can however assign a radio ID alias to the second text line on the display, just under the channel name.. You can type anything you want to in there..
If you add "MY ID" into the menu features, you can turn that text line on or off.. For added security, don't add the "MY ID" into the menu features, and the text will always appear when the radio is on..

Another thing you can do is called code plug aliasing. You can change the root of the code plug tree when displayed in CPS from the radio serial number to display whatever you want. All the radios that I am responsible for display "STOLEN! CALL 3529379862".
That way whenever a radio is read by CPS, that will be seen by the tech who reads the radio. I've received some calls from the Elgin Depot before when radios have been turned in for service to verify ownership. No one from Mexico has ever called me, though.

that's pretty cool. I just wish motorola would have incorperated some of the best from other radios when they made the 3000. QCII would have been a nice feature to have.
I was also thinking the other day if they planned on integrating a "add on port" in their next radio series. so you can add a flash memory card in it to add different things, or add more channels. obviously they would have to design it so it can only be read by that one radio, but it's an idea.

QCII has been avaliable on the 2500/5000 for some time now, and works nicely. You can also send QCII tones using the page/call features from the 2500/5000 series portables. They all have the same basic feature set, which includes QCII, so if you buy one, you should be all good.

I doubt they'd do that at this point in the life cycles of the 2500/5000, plus, there would have to be customer demand for it, and I don't know what else you'd use the memory for.
