Chuffing on ZONE 1 scan list

Hi Gang,

Just getting going here with my first use with an Astro Digital VHF model D04JKF9PW4AN, programmed just fine, RX's perfectly on all freqs, but when it is RXing weaker signals on ZONE 1, I am hearing a chuffing, well, more like a slight muting but not full muting of the audio at about 1.5HZ rate. Just using it on conventional analog repeaters in the area. I haven't spent much time trying to figure this out on my own.....there is so much to "adjust" in the RSS. I didn't want to start mucking with anything until I hear from the experts. It just sounds like someone is quickly changing the IF gain every 5. second or so.

Your thoughts>

Cheers

Paul

Well, some more sleuthing this AM revealed it's to do with the programming of 2 Zones' scan lists, or something to do with PRIORITY vs NON PRIORITY scanning or ???? Anyway, it's not a hardware issue, thankfully, I just need to figure out why it's chuffing. What I have are 2 identical scan lists, with 20 identical modes, except for the PL freqs (TX only). It only chufs on Zone 1, the one that has no PRIORITY channels in it. I can't find where to set the priority channels in the radio. I have the W4 head.

Anwyay, i'm slowly digging thru it. if you have any ideas...I'd love to hear them.

Cheers

Paul

If you are talking about the "ticking" or "audio holes" on a rx channel while in the scan mode, that is normal for a motorola radio, while in a priority scan mode.

If the scan list is all set for non-priority, then it should not happen.

What is happening, that tick or audio hole is the radio checking for activity on your priority or 2nd priority channel. On the priority channel, you should not hear any of that.

Hi PJ,

You nailed it. That is exactly the scenario. Okay, I'll stop looking for a problem as it is "normal".

Appreciate the follow up.

PS are you the PJ who works with his Dad at a radio shop? If so, howdy, I know you fellows from a few years back and I have moved to Vernon so don't get to visit all my old radio friends on the lower mainland anymore.

Cheers
