Yet Another FS Alerting Question...

First off, I want to apologize. I am sure this subject has either been covered before, is located on the BatLabs Minitor page, or is simply common knowledge to most of you. I have search both the board, and the BatLabs page and have found alot of usefull information for my project. I do not proclaim to be a electrician or master of electronics, but I do have a genarally good working knowledge of the topic. However all this information I have found has left me with a few questions.
My project consists of using the 6-pin DIN acc. socket on the back of a Minitor III Amplified Base (Mod# NYN8348A) to activate a bell (gong) in our fire station. The bell I have operates on 24 volt, 500 mAh (unsure yet if AC or DC). I understand the Amplified base has a relay inside that, upon (the pager) receiving proper tones activates fro either 10 sec or until the rest button is pressed. All this I understand.
What I don't understand is, the BatLabs page says the Amplified base relay output is a maxium of 28 volts, either AC or DC, and .5 amps (500Mah) which would work for the bell I have. The problem is though, in reading the info I get the impresion that the voltage, as well as the current type (AC /DC),is not constant or is selectable . If so, how would I "set it" for 24 volt AC or DC, or does it just adapt to what is needed (which goes against everything I know about electronics). Also, with the actual relay contacts (yes, i have the pinout already) witch is hot (positive) and which is neutral (negative), or again is it determined by how it is wired up (again, this goes against everything I know about electronics).
Again, I apologize if this question comes off as stupid, or has been covered in detail before, but I am unable to find an answer to these question anywhere. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
