An S-record is a specific codeplug file format. Some codeplugs use the s-record format, some don't.
If you're good a vi, sometimes directly editing the codeplug (that's an s-record type) is an easy way to change lots of parameters instead of doing it longhandedly with the RSS. Sometimes it completely necessary to edit the codeplug in order to get a radio to go out of its bandsplit.
The only radio I've edited an s-record on was a Saber. Not sure which others use that format.
