Your question is actually very good one, but i'd say it would help a lot if you could give more information before anyone can give out any definitive answers.. like would you prefer to have P25 or just plain analog FM radio?

On this board alone there's a ton of information available. All you have to do is to feel free and look around first.. To help you out to get started, here's some threads you'd better read first:
Guide to Astro Portable Radios (rewritten version of the original newbie guide)
akardam.net Motorola Tools & Documents has very comprehensive collection of guides.. That page was referred here on this board.
And last, but not least: Here's the web archive copy of THE ASTRO REPORT that was at http://www.p25.ca but seems to be not valid anymore (403 Forbidden).

Thanks for that, yea i would like to to P25 since i have a few radios that do normal analogue, i am mainly looking for something that will allow me to listen to P25 services and also let me have a few analogue channels programmed into it for use with some ham repeters.

Thanks

I have another question, what is the difference between

"Q806 ASTRO Digital Operation"
and
"Q361 ASTRO 25 9600 Baud Trunking"

I see some xts3000's with Q806 listed as apco25, i thought that apco25 was 9600bps so why the need for Q361.

Anyway my point is to work on 9600 would i need Q806 or Q361

Thanks

If memory serves, Smartnet/SmartZone uses a 3600 Baud, which would be the Q806. P25 Trunking systems use 9600 baud, which would be Q361.

Not quite.

"Q806 ASTRO Digital Operation" enables IMBE operation radio-wide.

Any form of trunking will require either the H37 SmartNet or H38 SmartZone option. If you have a 3600 system with any IMBE voice talkgroups (the control channel will still be analog) then you'll need the Q806 option.

On the Astro platform, the Q361 ASTRO 25 9600 Baud Trunking enables Project 25 trunking (9600, digital control channel and voice channels), but this requires special R06 series Host firmware.
