Is it normal for an XTVA with the included power amplified speaker to be REALLY loud even with the volume turned all the way down. It seems like the bottom 50% of the volume control does nothing.

You should be able to turn it all the way down. What is the minimum volume setting on the radio inserted? Some like to program it higher than zero so you can't totally mute the radio, which of course would be amplified in an XTVA.

I'm using it with an XTS3000 and it doesn't have a minimum volume setting.

Are you using this with a HHCH or a standard palm mike? which volume control are you using, the knob on the radio, knob on XTVA or the HHCH rocker switch. I have found with a HHCH, the controls on the hand mike override all the volume knobs regardless of their positions.

Standard palm mic that it came with. The radio's volume knob has no effect on anything while in the XTVA. The volume knob on the XTVA is the only one that does anything but it it seems the bottom 1/3 of the knob's rotation has no effect on volume.

I know sounds strange, but, what battery are you using on the XTS3000? I have had many strange problems (including volume) when using Honeywell or impress batteries in the XTVA. Moto made a replacement board to address the issues.
I can get the part numbers if needed.

I do in fact have an impress battery on there right now. I still have the standard one lying around so I'll give it a shot later when I feel like going back out in the blizzard.

And you're not using that hokey (hard to find) amplified speaker with its own volume knob, right?

Nope. No volume knob on this speaker.

Just put the normal battery on it and it still doesn't work right. The volume seems jumpy. I think something is wrong with the volume pot.

It sounds like a bad pot to me. I've never opened up an XTVA... if you can reflow the solder on the board, I'd give that a shot first. Then, either depot it and have it replaced or swap it yourself.

I'll put a volume pot inline with the speaker before I pay /\/\ money to fix anything. The volume it reduces to is just about right to hear it while driving if the stereo isn't on. Its only too loud if I'm just sitting there or parked. So knowing how lazy I am, it will probably stay in this state for a long time.

I have! The internal volume pot is amazingly toy-like and quite flimsy.. handle it with kid gloves.

If you happen to be using a Mostar amplified speaker (the one that uses the old-style housing and not the newer MCS-era housing), it has an internal pot. I do use one, and at its default setting I found it to be obscenely loud.. the XTVA's internal volume knob couldn't completely mute it. Once backed down, the XTVA's volume knob performed as advertised.

I'll give it a shot. Probably won't get to it until next weekend though. Thanks for the advice guys.

Mine XTVA volume control is touchy, also. It seems like it goes from too low to too high by barely touching it.
