Thats affirm - I beleive my phone dealer said 60 days or so when I went in to buy my new V60 - they will be pushing that as their latest, greatest flip, as the startac was a couple of years ago. Remember when it was $600 or 700 when it came out? (and my company was stupid enough to buy me one! :) )

How have you seen so many "toasted" AS? You work at a cellphone place? Didnt know that.

I didnt get a V60, I got the V60 lookalike (actually, my phone came out about a year ago, and /\/\ copied the design for the V60, but it looks like a gangsta phone :) ). I got the LGTM510 and love it. Also was about $100 cheaper.

Although this is sorta going OT...

The /\/\ StarTac 3000 - analog - was the BEST cell phone /ever/ made, as far as I'm concerned.

The Digital (at least TDMA) version pretty much sucked.

My wife has the V120 CDMA phone, and it seems like a pretty decent toy, but the antenna is a piece of junk.

The Star-Tac has been NLA'd. The CDMA versions have been better off than the TDMA ones, since their introduction they have been plagued with bugs.

Motorola just can't get their act together and build a good CDMA phone. Sprint dropped them last quarter altogether, though some stores still sell a version of the V60, and some K-Marts still sell a version of the V-120C for Sprint.

So far, the V60C has proved to be a decent phone, certainly a step up from the Star-Tac. The days of the rugged Motorola bricks died along with analog cellular. The new phones are right with their competitor's, in some areas, much less. The Kycoera/Qualcomm 2235 is a tough little tri-mode CDMA phone, good audio, RF and battery life, and it is in my opinion much better than a Star-Tac 7868. I would not consider a V60C to be as durable as an iDEN phone like the i700r- wasn't meant to be. Most wireless users like small, cute, and discreet not large, rugged and durable like us radio people are used to.

It is a shame Moto didn't get in the digital cellular/PCS ballgame years ago, they still believed that the sun rises and sets in AMPS, maybe because they co-developed AMPS, but AMPS days are numbered. For TDMA/GSM systems, the Nokia and Ericcson phones do a better job, though Moto's TDMA/GSM lineup is better than their CDMA products.

I am not speaking officially but I could see Verizon dropping Motorola if sales don't improve. So far, the V60C has been a good seller and has had a few problems, mostly with software, but a few hardware problems (the connector at the bottom and the antenna breaking, as well as premature display failures) but in line with everyone else. Have had more problems with Samsungs as far as failures than any other CDMA. Now those are complete and toal P.O.S.es.

Just bought my V60 and I love it!!! Great phone, best Motorola phone I have ever owned. Small and yet works great. Plus you can make them cool ring tones :)

I agree.

Motorola made some real kick-ass AMPS stuff - for AMPS, I won't TOUCH anything other than Mot...

But for digital, they just plain suck.

As much as I hate Nokia (REALLY crappy quality), they are about the best thing going.

Although, Ericsson (the spawn of the devil himself) makes "The Rock" that is a beast that's durable as heck - for TDMA, this is the toy to have.

Vehicle kits.

OK, so the StarTAC is being torpedoed. That sucks. What choices are available (Motorola, preferably, but information on any brand is good) for phones that have "full" car kits (i.e. full-duplex hands-free, provision to charge the batteries and connect an external antenna, optional handset would be nice too) available for them? Seeing as I've already drilled the hole for the antenna and use it on my StarTAC car kit, I don't want to walk away from that.

P.S. Ideally, it'd be a phone that works in 800/1900MHz, as that's the antenna that I have (2.4dB gain on both bands, less than 3" tall).

I would say the v60 is the way to go, I had mine for about 2 years and beat the life out of it, it is fairly durable but once you drop it it shows on the aluminum housing. Its got a pretty solid feel to it but in a much different way than the LG`s which in my opinion is an inferior phone and is reflected as much in the price (yes I have an LG because I prefer to spend the cash on nice radios not phones) One more to look at is the V8160-cdma even smaller than the v60 but you cant find them (discontinued?) That's too stinking bad. I was really starting to love my Startac 7868. It survived one of my rages where I threw it at about 45 MPH at a wall. The ONLY problem that resulted from it was that the mic came unsoldered from the PCB. It wouldn't have if they had soldered the mic electret directly to the PCB instead of that hokey design that Motorola came up with. Nevertheless, a 15 minute soldering repair and now I can throw it again.

It's amazing how well Motorola's older equipment survives a beating (or throwing).
