Greetings Motorola Gods.
I hope someone can answer my question.
I have a UHF, Spectra systems 9000 setup with the PA/Siren and DEK. Does anyone know if an A7 head will work in place of the A9 head. and if so are there any function limitations?

Thanks for any help or advice.

yes, you can upgrade the radio to support a A9 head, providing your MLM (which knows what your radio is, and holds your settings) is capable of doing this. Since you already have an A7, i'm not too worried about it...

Look under the spectra page on how to bitbang your model number to match. There's also info on here on how to bitbang the spectra to do head changes which is also required to make sure things "match"... I have seen these upgrades done, and they do work rather well. You'll need Lab to use BitBanger, or to dump in a different model codeplug.

Some people also have had success dumping a9 codeplugs in, just make sure you don't dump a T83 in to a D43 Radio.. It just doesn't like it.

Thanks for the quick reply Alex, maybe I did not state my question correctly. What I'm trying to do is put an A7 haed on an A9 radio. Do you know if that is possible.

Doh.

Ok, yeah. Sorry about that. Most want the A9 :) heehee.

Anyway

yes you can. You'll still need to either bitbang or drop in the proper codeplug to make it work... You can also try to go into the normal rss and switch your control head type to "ENHANCED" if your able to (might require lab) and then you'll have all your channel names chopped to 8 characters. program the radio up and your good to go. If you want to make it dash mount, you'll need an interconnect board.

The only thing your going to loose is an addititional button or two above the screen, and the really nice 11 character display....

I am a big A9 Fan. IF your going to have a spectra, might as well be with an A9 (my oppinion there!)

If you have the old style remote head, I have the old style remote cables that I'm more than willing to part with. (non Systems 9000).

I think that should help you a bit, and sorry for mis reading!

Thanks again Alex. Yes that helps. I like the A9 head as well but I'm up to 4 spectras in my truck and the A9 head is just too big. Too bad...

There are two types of a7 heads: standard and enhanced. They both have boards that look the same but have different part numbers. The HLN6075 display board is a standard head and WILL NOT work with a dek box. You can't plug the mic in the back of a remote head with this board either.
