You need to buy the flash dongle from Motorola first, and then find someone with a SmartRIB.

Um, no. It's not at all like doing a Waris series firmware upgrade. The FLASHport upgrade can only be arranged through a local Motorola rep (an MSS can deal with him for you). The package (if/when it finally arrives) will consist of a hardware key (a "dongle", if you will). This harware key will be hard set for the exact number of radios that can be flashed. There will be a floppy disk with the unique upgrade file on it, good only for going from one specific flashcode to another specific flashcode. There will also be another floppy disk with the SmartRIB software file on it, although it's not necessary if you have it installed from a previous FLASHport procedure. Other than that, Alex is correct that a SmartRIB is required to perform the upgrade. Oh, and it's expensive too.

I just recently check with the local MSS. The price to get the flash I wanted in my MTS2000 was going to cost me $225 from Moto and $125 for them to flash it in. They advised me it would take 6 to 8 weeks just to order the flash. They would have to send a copy of my old code plug with the order. I just sold the radio and purchased a XTS flashed to the top.

That sucks. I know if I want my radio (Astro Saber) I can get it within a week. All they need to know is the model, serial numbers and current flashcode..

Sorry for the short and brief info, but as Wavetar and others have pointed out, it's expensive.

Your looking at $500-$600 just for the smart rib new!

http://www.batlabs.com/flash.html has the info on the flash upgrades, and some other info. I think Wavetar did sum it up nicely.

Man... too much money for my taste...

I think maybe getting yourself a good XTS would cost less.

I recently purchased a used FLASH DONGLE from someone and carefully took it apart, ( what a pain) but I did succeed. I have not finished doing a completly analized the dongle but I do not believe that the it has to be programmed up with so many flashes for a radio. I beleive that the number of flashes are in the disk that is supplied with the flashcode and every time you do a flash, the disk keeps track. I would need the disk or a copy from the person I bought the dongle from.

I may be wrong but after looking at the components in the dongle, I do not see any EPROM, or EEPROM.

I beleive the dongle is used only to achieve the proper adressing so that the radio will self check with the correct check sum.

I won't mention the name of the person I bought it from but if they read this , is it possible you can email me an archive of the disk with the flashcodes on it.

By the way, if you want to flash a tool proof MTS or any flash portable radio as far as that goes, you need to get a like radio with all options and remove the flash chip. Read it with a programmer and then save the info. Same way you would do a Spectra MLM as described in the Spectra section of this board.
