Is there any way to program a CDM 1550 S split (450 to 520 ) into the 440 ham band?

Yes. Talk to user "Andreas" here, he is the master of this, bar none.

you can do that with the red battery and no major radio alterations

Don't know if you were aware or not but the 220 CDM hack will work on any Waris radio. Just find the codeplug that matches your TANAPA and use the formula from bandedit-en.doc to find the range values you need.

You can do what Otaku suggests, or you could write in a "R" split file into the radio and choose application only when you write it in. Your tuning values will be unchanged, as they are stored in a different place that doesn't get written. If you stick to the 440 range, it should perform just fine.

the one HT1250 i converted over was extremely deaf at 444.2 and its TXPO was only at 2w at 449.2

Im sure other radios would perform better, but it was tested to spec in its normal bandsplit. My 220 on the other hand works like a champ... gotta love 160ch on 220 with MDC1200!

Tuning values play a part in that, I'm sure. The 220 radios have tuning points in the 222-225 range even with the stock band splits in place.
