is a MCX1000 a good radio?

a guy has offered me one in trade and i was wondering what all the features are. Pretty much whats the +'s and -'s Thanks in AdvancE!!

It's a great radio! It was the predecessor to the spectra and has a lot of the same features. Depending on the trade, i'd go for it!

I sold a 128 ch MCX1000 remote mount to a buddy of mine with the vol. fire dept. about a year ago. Best radio I've ever owned. Solid. I kick myself for selling it and have told my buddy that I'd buy it back if he ever wants to sell it. D--- good radio.

Bets radio I ever had was an MCX1000, it's kinda like a poor man's Spectra. I just picked up another one on Ebay and am hoping it works o.k.

Great radio. 128 channels gets you every amateur radio repeater channel + a few simplex and commercial freq's if you like. If it has the FAST LOCK SYNTHESIZER, then you are really hopping: fastest scan going in a two-way radio. AND unlike the Spectra, you can include the entire 128 channels into ONE scan list. Scan for COR and PL is FAST too!

You can program PL's per mode, or leave unprogrammed and let the user select from the front panel. I don't think Spectra can do that!

It is bullet proof for IMD, VHF has TWO helical front ends that are selected automatically depending on your frequency. As such, it won't do 138-174 continuous, rather two 6 MHz segments (more with a bit of degradation).

RSS for this radio isn't as friendly as newer RSS which have an INSERT feature.

This was the last mobile built in Toronto, Ontario before they shut it and the factory down.

Solid radio alright, make sure your dash can handle about 10lbs hanging on it.. its heavy..
Can you leave they hauled these things to to the top of Mount Everest!
One thing.. Check that that the VCO is rock stable.. they had a bad habit of becoming unstable, especially the early VCO's that were not encased in their own shielding. I'm sure a replacement VCO is no longer available.. the last one I priced was about 700.00 CDN$
