How far will Saber II go out of band??

I read that it will go about +/-5mhz out of band. How does it act in those 5mhz? Does it do ok, or does it drop off? I run across the 148-174 Sabers all the time, and want to program 2m ham freq's into it.

Most in general will go 1Mhz. appx.

If you want FULL specs, don`t go more than 1-2 Mhz behind the official bandlimits. With degraded specs you can use the radios 2-8 Mhz (depending on the frequency-band) behind their rated bandsplits. I`m using some UHF models (440-470Mhz) for HAM-radio (here in DL the repeater inputs are on 431Mhz - no problem for the PLL). Only a few milliwatts less power on 431Mhz. RX is acceptable down to 434Mhz. VHF models (146-174Mhz or 146-162Mhz split) work OK on 144Mhz.

That will vary from radio to radio and module to module. I've seen (and owned) a VHF Saber that delivered a "serviceable" level of performance more than 5 MHz out of its rated bandsplit, and it locked up on channel reliably a full TEN MHz out of band, both above and below the normal bandsplit. (Special widebanded RSS) That was an unusally good radio. But I didn't get a chance to spec it out on a monitor.

You should be able to get 2 MHz out of any band with performance that meets or approaches specs, on any Saber.

I've seen several saber IIs in various splits and flavors that were programmed with the version 6 special wideband RSS, used by an unnamed Govt. agency, that did 142 to 184 MHz with no measureable power or sens dropoff and with no internal mods, but interestingly I was told that even though they all did 142 to 184 without a mod it was a major bear to make them go below 142MHz for the government required use down to 138MHz, which of course wouldn't be a problem in your case. It's just that darn spcl version of rss 6 that you would need to get it to work down to 144.
