How exactly DO you open it? Just remove the 2 screws on the battery plate or what? I want to check out my Saber 1. Thanks!

You will need a spanner type slotted screw driver. I tried to locate one in the City I live in and had no sucess so I just fabricated my own. Or a pair of needlenose or dykes you care nothing about (will ruin the cutting edge) can work in a pinch also.

Once you get the screwdriver you can loosen the two spanner type slotted screws at the base. The Phillips type screws stay attached.

Then a gentle tug on the antenna will pull the chassis out of the casing.

I believe you simply unscrew the spanner nuts at the bottom of the portable, remove knobs and antenna, and the case should slide off.

Spanner bits can be found in a 32 piece Security Bit set. I bought mine at a flee market, but later found that my local hardware store carried the same set(!) It comes in a red plastic case, if you are looking for it. Quite handy to have.

PLEASE!!! don't remove the knobs!!! they have a one time use plastic grommet inside and you will be spending about 30 buck for new ones!

Just simply loosen the slotted spanner nuts on the bottom. Once they are loose you are OK. They are captive and are not supposed to come off. Then simply pull the radio out of the case. BE SURE YOU DONT HOLD THE SIDE BUTTONS IN WHILE YOU DO THIS!

In a real pinch at work, I open up our secure saber 1's with a modified heavy duty paper clip. Don't use those small cheesy one's, but the nice thick one's with the ridges on them.

May not be perfect science, but works for me!

If you were to order the spanner tool from Mot, its around $20.

Another tool you can use is the startac antenna replacement tool that has teh sam sort of notching on it. If you goto radio shack and buy a startac replacment antenna, one should come with it. Besides, the Radio Shack replacement antennas are much better than the Motorola ones... go figure...

Someone mentioned removing the antenna. NOT on a Saber, you don't! The manual says explicitly that after loosening the slotted spanner nuts, you pull the radio out of the housing by pulling on the antenna, which is plenty strong for the job.

DO NOT PUSH ON THE SLOTTED SPANNER NUTS in order to start the radio moving out of the housing. If you do, you run the risk of pushing a frame stud right out of the frame, and then you've got to replace the frame, and you might end up with the radio stuck in its housing if the spanner nut is tight on the stud with nothing to hold it on the inside. I had to CUT a housing off a radio once due to some idiot doing that! He didn't like the bill I sent him but he paid, and he learned!

Maybe I should state that I was talking about the Startac (the cell phone) antenna replacement kit has a tool to remove the antenna from the cell phone. The tool is notched on the bottom, and happens to also fit the saber. The antenna that comes with this tool also works well for your Startac (and no, you can't use it for your saber...)

Adding to this old but handy thread.... you also need to make sure that the flashport/accessory port cover has been removed... I pulled for ages before realizing that the screw that goes in the top is threaded into the top of the unit and the little tab on the bottom was under the housing.. pulled it off and out it slid... a bit of Armor All on your finger applied to the rubber gasket around the top eases with it sliding back into the housing.
