I'm considering making a battery analyzer
for my Jedi batteries. Anyone know
if I can tap the needed contacts from a 4 pin charger ? Figure I'll put a DC voltmeter
on a charger shell and put a momentary switch with a resistive load accross the leads. Any comments or ideas appreciated.

HI:

Battery Analizer? or Battery Checker?

Analizers / conditioners generally pace
the battery through a few discharge / charge
test, and then average the battery capicity
in a current readout in Ma per hour.

If you wish to test the battery, one can
use a radio or a resistor accross the output
termianls of the battery for what ever rated
current that is desired

You are not really able to test the battery
through the charge contacts as many Motorola
batteries are " protected " from explosions
if they are placed in a pocket with loose
change.

There have been a few cases where the battery
was placed in a persons pocket, and had the
change become welded accross the the battery
contacts with a explosion that followed.

Only way of accessing the batteries direct
is through the contacts that mate with the
radio contacts

Each battery has a diode in the charge + lead for the required protection. To analize and or test a battery you would have to make contact with the same contacts the radio uses so ypu can load the battery for checks.
You can put two leads on the charge + contact and battery - contact on your charger to go to a voltmeter for checking. When the charger is slow charging the battery you can read the voltage on the battery. You have to subtract the diode drop in the battery to come to a accual value, usally .5 to .7 volts.

Thanks very much for the input. What came to mind when thinking about this project
was the battery checker (thanks for right terminology on this Monty) that I used some years back for the MT-500 radios (TEK-48 or similar # where you could drop the radio or battery into a charging cup that had a voltmeter and lo/hi load buttons). Any decent checkers or analyzers out there under $100. for the Jedi series ?

See the posts on battery analizers. The unit from Advtech in Florida is a good one, and is available from Motorola for about $90 with the Jedi battery adapter.

Part numbers WPPN4004AR Battery plate $15
WPPN4002AR Charger $70

WPPN4064AR Battery adapter plate for HT750, HT1250 & HT1550 $15
