according to the service manual, top display/no display radios use one type of firmware ROM IC with one part number and full/limited keypad/display radios use another. On 2002-03-06 23:44, PCSAR 4x4 652 wrote:
Is it possible to swap an MTS2000 model 1 front cover to an MT2000 model 3? Will the radio see it and allow the RSS to program it?
the hardware IC would theoretically have to be replaced.

It's controlled by a setting in the controller. If you have access to lab you can change the display type in the radio settings. BUT, maybe I wouldn't do that to a MTS2000....maybe if the controller version was < 5.42....
This works the same way as with MTX8000's. There's two settings to change. One is change the display type from 6 character to 14 and the radio knows what type of face it has. Then add the number buttons into the keypad settings to enable the keys.

You can force the Model II or III codeplug into the radio with LAB, and it will take it, but the display & front buttons won't work. It is a handy thing to do if you have a bunch of Type I trunking only, maximum 16 mode Model I's, and you just want to convert them to Type II trunking with 48 mode capability, and aren't worried about the buttons or display.

Bubbasnest is correct about being able to change the display/button configuration, but it won't help you if it's a Model I radio you want to convert. It WILL work the other way, if you have say a Model I codeplug with SmartZone, and you wish to dump it into your SmartNet Model III. Just change the display/button config, add your buttons, and you're done!

OK, let me clarify what I want to do.
I do not need trunking, we don't use it.
we do conventional only mostly simplex. I use this radio on my mobile extender (VRS) system 9000. what I do want is the display feature mostly. If there is a programming key available for it, then I would like the buttons to work or atleast be able to program them for "Scan Prog", "Scan", "Low power", "PL/No PL" etc. Like my A9 spectra head.
I have access to MTSX LAB RSS. If it is just a matter of swapping the complete front covers and LAB RSS'ing it to enable the cover and enable the buttons and display, I will do the conversion. If not I will sell this one and get model 3.
Thanks,

OK, what is the radio that you want the model 3 face on and include the model number.
If your target is the MT2000, you probably can't make it work for the reasons mentioned in the previous post. Although it might work. Some MTX8000 B3's will convert but not all....
If your target is the model 1 MTS2000, I assume that all model 1 MTS2000 faces have the 6-digit display across the top like the model 1 MTS2000 I have on my desk (mn H01UCD6PW1BN) and that yours is the same. If this is the case, the radio is already capable of display. All you have to do is make the changes in lab, put on the new face and you're done. I'll warn you about toolproofing, it WILL mess up your radio and you will have a very hard time getting it back to operational status. Make sure you read it with No Pack/Unpack and save it in the Main>F3>F6 menu using the Save Archive. Then you have a binary copy of your radio with which to receover from a 01/93 error.
The key digit in your model number is the 6th digit. If it's a C, it probably won't work. D=6-digit top display, F=14-digit limited keypad, H=14-digit full keypad.

OK, Looks like WAVETAR is correct.
After several days trying to get it to work with the help of BUBBASNEST, we found :
The radio will take the codeplug for a menu/full keypad but the LCD shows nothing.
The front cover will only light up when the green button is pushed.
No button functions or beeps.
The TOP display cover does not seem to care what the display option is.
Whether you tell it it's a 1 line/6 digit or 1 line/14 digit, it works. But it will only show you the first 6 digits.
There is a scroll rate option setting, but I don't think it will let you scroll the display. If you can, I don't see where to program a button to do it.
Anyone else know if you can make it scroll the rest of the digits let us know.
Thanks for all you help and efforts.
