Yes it can be. If you are attempting to change or add trunking system info or talkgroups the software must detect a copy of the appropriate system key file stored on your computer. This is a form of security to keep unauthorized programmers from programming a radio.

Well, along the same lines, I'm glad somebody asked that question.

I do know what a system key is, but I have never messed with any trunking radios before now. I have a Maxtrac B7 that has two systems in it all ready. I'd like to get them out of there (nothing on either in this area) , and there is a system locally that I'd like to try and monitor. I think that I have all of the info available except the radio won't let me do anything without the key.

I've programmed in conventional stuff easily, of course. I just can't get rid of those two systems or add anything new. Is there anything I can do personally?

In order to add or delete any trunking system information you must have a system key file in your computer or an FTR key installed on your computer.

The system key file is a unique file for each trunked system. These files are only available from the specific trunked system manager. It would be extremely unusual for a trunked system manager to share the system key file with anyone other than his service shop.

An FTR key is a hardware device that attaches between your pc and the rib. With it installed you can program virtually any feature the software is capable of doing, no system key files needed. Sounds great doesn't it. It is...but. These are very rare, closely guarded items used my Motorola. Very few shops and even fewer individuals have them. Very rare.

I have a couple FTR keys in a box, I didn't know what to use them for, I will send them to you, but I will need some collateral.... seeing as how valuable these are, how about you send me a couple of astro sabers and I'll send you one to use?

What radios do you own?: APX4K, XTL5K, NX5200, NX700HK

I heard about a program called SKG, or SKEYGEN, or something of the like that can make system keys for your radio. I think that all you have to know is the system ID of the radio system that your radio communicated with- and that's all that there is to it. It is, however, a little bit of "work" when compared to that FTR thing where all you have to do is connect it!
