Making a base station (new scenario)
Hi everyone I'm new to the board. I just bought a gm300 40 watt basically to communicate with some of my friends who have gp2000. The problem is I have a ht1000 4 watt and it does not reach their 4 watt radios across the campus i live on. (We all have gmrs licenses). We are only 2 miles apart but there is a academic mall with a lot of buildings in the way. 1.)Will i be able to communicate with the gp2000 across campus using my gm300 if I program it to 462.550 with 40 watt tx/rx? 2.) Where should I put the ant. (I am in a dorm room with one window on the 3rd floor, which is the highest floor and the window opens but the screen does not open)? Thanks for any help.

transmitting out
Your GM300 should blow the doors down on their gp2000's and they will hear you fine. But two things get in the way and those are, how well can you hear them and where else can you mount the antenna. I put in a nice antenna specialties glass mount on the window of a friends dorm room so he could monitor the local 911. It worked well but I had to strap on the CMC rescue gear and dangle down to the glass since there was no way to mount it from the window (solid pane). Also helped it faced the local PS tower. In the end he was hearing stuff from over 90 miles away. Now if the screen isn't going anywhere, that might hem up some signal, but not enough to kill what you are looking to do if its just to talk to them from dorm to dorm, right?
Hope this will help, and yes I'm foolish enough to dangle from heights and NO, I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!

If the lights are out when you leave the station and then come on the second you key up, you know you have enough power.
You know you might be a little too into this if you start repelling off the roof of your school to glue an antenna to the outside of your room....

Me: "What exactly is a 900Mhz UHF CB?"
Them: "A very nice CB at 900Mhz speed!"
