Making a Maxtrac narrowband??
Can Maxtracs be made Narrowband easily? I'm looking for an inexpensive way to make a remote receiver and the Maxtrac has historicly been good for this. But if it can't do narrowband, I can't use it. Perhaps there is a kit or something to make it do 2.5Khz bandwidth.

Yes Motorola has a 25khz to 12.5 khz narrow band kit for the Maxtrac.
You must specify VHF or UHF conversion kit.
The GP300/P110 radios also have a 12,5 conversion kit but this kit for conversion was for both UHF and VHF bands.
This is not ture for the Maxtrac you do need to specify UHF or VHF.
Last i got was dealer cost of around 75.00 per 12.5 conversion kit for the maxtrac.
For the GP300 it was a cost of about 50..00 per kit.
I dont recall the part numbers at the moment but ill try to remember to look them up and post them.
If youd like to read a post i posted on the 25 to 12.5 conversion for the GP300/P110 radio go hto this site.
Im hoping that just typing in the info at the top of the post will get you to it but if not go to my profile and click on all posts by EKLB and on the 2nd page go to the title GP300 25 to 12.5 conv and click on it.
This post explains in detail whats involved and so forth and would give you a good idea as to the Maxtrac as well.
Well here goes the post= hope this works.

Just got the info located on the part numbers for the Motorola 12.5 conversion kits.
For the Motorola GP300 or P110 portables both use this 25 to 12.5 conversion kit and its good for both the VHF and UHF as well.
For the GP300/P110 Motorolas part number = HLN9578 cost i have to me was 53.75
For the conventional Maxtrac mobile Motorolas part numbers are as follows.
UHF 12.5 conversion kit = Part number HLN9576A cost to me was 74.20
VHF 12.5 conversion kit = Part number HLN9575A cost to me was 74.20
I do recall hearing about Comunications systems inc having the conversion kits too but i have not had any experience with them .
Not sure but i think i was told CSI provided the components to Motorola for there kits.
I think it would be a good idea to check them out first and see what the price diference would be.
Thanx EKLB

There ya go..
Just needed a [ u r l ] at the start and a [ / u r l ] at the end ... include the []'s but not the spaces...
Ted..

Geez, guys.....!
I normally don't rip on people for spelling errors in a post, but if you're going to list a thread reference, you have to spell it right!

- What radios do you own?: XPR5550 XTL5000 XTS2500(V&U)
I took a look at the link, looks like it will work, however, there is still the issue having to do with older radios not meeting NTIA frequency tolerance for federal narrow frequencies. It is tighter than the wide band tolerance. Maybe there is a fix for that, too. Perhaps better crystals? We have a bunch of the old Mitreks in use and $25 sounds attractive for the filters. Anybody got any ideas for beefing up the frequency stability?

- What radios do you own?: More than I can count
The freq tolerance for wide band is .0005ppm narrowband is .00025ppm. I was thinking the same thing for the MX, and Saber series radios. If someone would make a hi-stab rock for them. Just hope the rocks aren't more than the radio is worth. For CAP they want flexibility, meaning both wide/narrow in the same radio, oh, BTW they also want APCO 25. I don't see why for personal owned radios used in CAP for SAR or other simplex operations they don't just let us use a converted radio. I was told to throw away all the MX portables and buy WALMART FRS. Sounds really stupid, especially when a few years back the use of FRS was a terminating offence..
