Whelen Talon causes RFI on VHF Spectra

Post by 007 »

Here's one for you Talon user's...

I was cleaning the inside of the car windows yesterday, and when finished I fired up the Talon to see if the backflash decreased with clean glass (it did), I heard interference from the Talon power supply thru the Spectra.

It was the Talon, as no other lights or equipment was on...the noise pulse exactly matched the flash pattern of the Talon, and was clearly audible on the Spectra's speaker.

This was on a 155.xxx freq, and when I switched to a 145.xxx ham repeater, the noise disappeared.

The Talon is mounted in the upper left of the rear window of my Impala, and the Spectra antenna is a NMO Maxrad 1/4w on the roof, behind the sunroof. The Talon power cord and NMO coax run down opposite C pillar's and do not cross, touch or otherwise contact each other.
Do not make Sig angry...he'll just keep ringing the bell.

A few wraps of the Talon's power cord through a ferrite bead should help.

I had a similar problem with a Dashmiser II. Relocate the location for your power source and ground for either unit. The further away from each other the better.

interesting. I believe scotty (x1sspic) has the same problem with his radio/siren speaker interference with his Whelen Slimlighter M version LED.

This is actually a problem with the Talon, though I'd never heard about it before with the slimlighter. The RFI protection on the Talon sucks in some units. Other units don't have a problem. My talon causes enough RF above the mirror of my window to cause my ham rig whose attenna is on the trunk of my car to tick with the pulses. Kind of annoying, and making me consider going back to the Predator.

If you call Whelen, I think they will ask you to send the unit back for repair. Don't hold me to that though.
