Need some siren suggestions...

Post by litsnsirn »

A vehicle change has me switching to something small and without a metal roof, so a change is in order from the A9 Spectra to something of the mid to low power, probably MCS. I'm not sure that I really want 110W keying up, antenna a couple of feet from my head, with no metal in the way. The drawback is that I lose my PA/airhorn(which is all I need) with this settup and I am not sure what I want to do, I was thinking of trying a Maratrac siren as I know that they can be used alone. I know that Whelen has a stand alone product, but have no experience with it. Any suggestions?

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

Yeah...sounds like your stuck. Sticking with a radio (Moto) based siren is most likely going to not be worth it. Whelen has the Alpha series that allows you to use any kind of switch with the remote siren, or u can get it as a small self contanied unit. Q siren tones area available with some of them.

I keep agonizing over this issues myself

I've got the sys 9000 siren - it nice because of the control head interfeace and DEK, but the box is huge.

I REALLY want intergrated light/siren control module - that's how i planned the warning system on the suburban.

What are my options?

Dump a ton of money into a Smart Siren or CENCOM?

Or do I just get a relay board from TST and use my HLN1196 DEK I have sitting here new in the box.

PRO: Smart Siren ro CENCOM means neat and centrallized wiring

Cons

One more control head and mic to find a place for in an already filled console.

HELP!

siren issues

There are so many options out there to choose from. I prefer Whelen about as much as I prefer /\/\, probably more. I've been dealing in/with \/\/ products for 10+ years now and as far as I'm concerned they can't be beat. There are stand alone units that are self contained and there are the Alpha series that allow remote placement. It all depends in the application, space and what you want for features. If you want more detailed info PM me and we'll talk.

I've thought about the SS2000 and that is more than I need in this vehicle, plus they can be quirky. They also don't sound as good as the old SYS9000 siren. I've thought about getting an Astro Mobile with the HHCH but the cost is rather substantial for something that I will not use(I have no need for digital VHF). Maybe I need to check out the Whelen...

Can't hurt. My offer still stands.

I am starting a project to enable a X9000 siren to be used without the Spectra or Syntor radio. Looking at remoting the control of the X9000 Siren box over a couple of small wires, "stay tuned".

Some questions I have...

I don't have any experience w/ the hi-power spectra's, but can't you cut back on the power output of the unit via software?

Or is space for the drawer an issue too?

What vehicle are you mounting this unit in?

The MCS has siren config options in the CPS. Anyone ever (successfully) graft a DEK and SYS9000 siren onto an MCS?

It can be dialed back, somewhat, I've never had the need to do it on a 110W Spectra. Space is definitely an issue, I talked to a friend of mine that is an upfitter and he stocks the Whelen horn voice unit, so when I get a chance, I'm going to go listen to it.
