Hi there from Snowy Canada

I have used the Jt1000 and Ht1000
for many years. It has the o-ring gasket inside the radio. It is not a good gasket for rain and dust. These radios are in the dust alot. The gasket sucks. The two round holes on bottom of radio aids in letting in the
dust etc.

My two pennys from Canada. Raymond

Those holes are to pi** us off.
But they make us money on repairs.
This is one of the most costly portable radio
for it time to repair. Raymond (pi*sed)

What radios do you own?: Motorola, Kenwood, Icom

I use the MTS2000 and HT1000 all the time in rain, dust and snow, and have never had any problems with them. I don't know exactly what the holes are for, but if you did get water into the radio, they make great drains.

Note here, ALLWAYS grease the O ring before putting the radio back to gether. Use silicon clear "grease". Also most of the moisture gets in thru the speaker grille and the accessory jack. Or thru the top by the controls, check the sealing here and under the knobs. Same for GP300/350/P110/HT600 and adinfitium.
I have not had problems in the feild with water, usally the radio is under my rain coat. If in doubt, use a Ziplock bag!!!!!

Mt1000, HT600/P200 are very susceptable to moisture on the accessory/speaker mic connector blowing up the controller or causing other porblems in the radio. Always keep the accessory jack coverd with the cover that has the gasket in it.
I n the service manuals it mentions to "grease" the seals as Will mentioned.

Remember to "keep your powder dry" always "grease" your seals.

Hi
We have lots of HT1000's being used in in wet enviroments without much problems.

We do however have a large trucking firm using them on their yard and maintence people. Their biggest problem is the guys in the washbays. The detergent breaks down the water tension so completely it seems to just wick into eveywhere.

The shafts of the knobs are not sealed and eventually the controls seize. Fortunately Motorola has an assembly of the controls and flexs so repairs are just minutes so minimum labour for the customer.

Use a speaker/mic to keep the radio under the clothing and let the mic take the beating in the water... cheaper to fix a mic!

cheers
