Off Topic----Packet radio/Ham/Internet

Does anyone know if there are rules for setting up an Internet link on 2M/440 via packet? Say you want to use AIM in the truck via the house radio... Is this permissible?

I have looked at the FCC rules, scanned some other websites, and since there are plenty of hams here, I would trust your judgement much more.

Also, if you have any experience in setting one up, I would like to know what is involved.

I belive that it is legal to do this. You would need a TNC on a radioand computer link at home on the net. You would also need a TNC on a radio and computer in your car or laptop. I don't think it would be very fast though. You wouldn't want to go surfin with it and pictures would take forever to download. I don't know much about packet, but if you e-mail some people on packet websites, they might be able to tell you how it's done. I just got into packet and the digital modes a few days ago, and I was wondering the same thing. I have a whole computer setup in my car for APRS tracking, and I also wanted mobile internet. I'll ask around too and let you know what I find out.

Think about security.. remember that you can't use encryption on the ham bands, so everything will be in the clear, and anyone can monitor it.

About data security: You may or may not have heard of a something called an IP traffic "sniffer" program. Almost all traffic over the internet is sent in the open. So, don't worry about lack of encryption over the air. There are more things to worry about in life then data security while using AIM.

Thanks. I am installing the TNC and laptop for APRS and going to try a link at home when I setup a TNC and radio there.

Security isn't a concern, but where I go off roads, cell's don't work for radio does. I like to be connected just in case.

My vehicle setup will be an IBM Thinkpad/Garmin GPS 3+/Kantronics KPC3+/ICOM 2800

Look up the canadian ILRP system.
It is the internet link radio program.
It is a great computer to radio anywhere link.two locations or more together.

Regarding security.
I assume that any traffic that I send over the network will be monitored, unless it is encrypted in some way.

I use several grades of password:
insecure - privacy latch
mildly secure - wafer lock
secure - deadbolt

secure includes all financial, and primary accounts. mildly secure is for pay sites, etc
insecure is for bbs's, chat boards, etc..

secure NEVER goes over the network in the clear. it always goes encrypted (SSL or SSH).
